Description

Job Summary

Responsible for the planning and delivery of care utilizing nursing processes: assessment, implementation, and evaluation. Oversees the plan of care, utilizes effective problem-solving strategies, and applies evidence-based practice. Supports and upholds quality standards of a Magnet designated hospital and Patient Bill of Rights. Practices under the supervision of the Nursing Manager/Director and has passion for learning. Provides compassionate and family centered care for Hematology/Oncology patients.

Job Specific Duties

  • Performs a nursing assessment for all patients. Communicates the patient's progress including critical findings or changes in the condition with the provider and/or other disciplines involved in the care of the child. 
  • Completes patient admission history and discharge planning thoroughly and accurately as per policy. Admission history includes medication and allergy history, spiritual, cultural, developmental, educational/learning, and psychosocial needs. 
  • Verifies patient's roadmap, protocol, and orders for correctness and accuracy. Follows physician's orders and administers chemotherapy and supportive medications adhering to medication administration and chemotherapy policies. Ensures appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper disposal of hazardous drugs per hospital policy.  
  • Provides nursing to immuno-compromised patients including: central line monitoring, lab draws and monitoring of lab results, blood product administration, sepsis monitoring, and electrolyte administration.  
  • Plans, implements and documents the plan of care in collaboration with the other disciplines and services to assure safe and efficient care. 
  • Delegates nursing care based on knowledge of staff qualifications and competency.
  • Performs reassessments as per policy, when there is a change in the plan of care, after the administration of analgesics, and/or when another intervention is performed. 
  • Provides education and documents on patient/family teachings on health-related needs (i.e. disease, medications, chemotherapy, pain, discharge, safety, nutrition, fever management, etc.). Communicates with patient and family on additional resources available to the patient. 
  • Promotes an “error-free” working environment by consistently providing high-quality & safe care as prompted. Assesses bodily systems, ensures safe, efficient care delivery with emphasis on the absence of medication errors, avoidance of falls, prevention of central line infections, ouch-free procedural pain and pain reduction, and performs thorough hand-offs. 
  • Accountable to accreditation and regulatory requirements of the DNV, CMS, DOH, FACT, COG, COC.

Qualifications

Minimum Job Requirements

  • RN Licensure within the State of Florida or Multi-State Enhanced Nursing License Compact (eNLC) – maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
  • American Heart Association BLS – maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
  • American Heart Association PALS required within 1 year of hire - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment 
  • APHON - Pediatric Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Course required within 1 year of hire – maintain active and in good standing throughout employment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • BSN degree or currently enrolled in BSN program
  • A minimum of 1 year experience as an RN in Pediatric in Hematology/Oncology setting preferred
  • Possesses proficiency in computers and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) preferred
  • Career Development: National certification Certified Pediatric Nurse i.e. (CPHON) or (CPON) or BMTCN preferably within 5 years of hire
  • Able to analyze and interpret data and utilize the information to make judgments regarding patient care
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to positively influence, hold self and others accountable
  • Able to work effectively in collaborative environment
  • Ability to apply principles of evidence-based practice, analytical thinking and service excellence in practice
  • Able to float to various nursing units if needed while maintaining the delivery of clinical excellence and high quality service
  • Able to provide coverage for on-call assignments per departmental and hospital policy
