Heavy Equipment Operator

Overview:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Primary Duties

  • Ensures a safe work environment.
  • Operates various types of equipment during construction or maintenance projects.
  • Responsible for inspecting and ensuring that assigned equipment is safe to operate. Responsible for accurate completion and submission of Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports.
  • Heavy equipment operators will operate the following: heavy duty trucks; compaction equipment; backhoe and excavators; graders and dozers with winch; front end loaders configured with either bucket or forks, scrapers, vac trucks and large industrial forklifts.
  • Responsible for the performance of general facility maintenance duties with equipment under the direct supervision of an on-site supervisor.
  • Maintains a system of roads, pads and even aviation certified dirt runways where applicable. Removes snow, scarves the ground, loads and unloads equipment and materials.
  • Remains in strict compliance with permitting requirements, ASH Standards and other compliance-oriented directives. Responsible for completing and documenting Task Hazard Analysis and utilizes STOP work authority where applicable.
  • Informs supervisor of any incidents involving injury, spills, equipment malfunction and/or damage
  • Clerical duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Duties:

This position has no supervisory duties.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

A heavy equipment operator will be qualified for at least one (1) of the above listed classes and types of equipment but may be qualified for more. A heavy equipment operator should possess a general knowledge of the functional operation, the purpose, the capabilities and limitations of any piece of equipment he or she is qualified to operate. Display a thorough knowledge of the proper manner in which to operate and maintain a specific piece of equipment. Have the ability to read, interpret or use capacity charts, rigging diagrams, common hand signals, grade stakes or other applicable drawings. Demonstrate the safe accessories within the range intended. Read and understand the results and purpose of all gauges on the equipment. Be able to properly maintain and service the piece of equipment daily.

  • Must display ability to read and understand safety manuals and safety/warning signs. Must display sufficient oral communication skills to be able to give and receive oral safety warnings, instructions and task assignments.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to prepare a detailed time sheet/log of daily work assigning proper coding for invoicing purposes.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

Physical Demand

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. A pre-hire post offer Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) will be conducted to determine an employees ability to perform to the job standard. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

MOBILITY: Must be able to access all controls and all parts of machine for service. Must be able to push/pull 50 pounds for 20 feet.
HEARING: Must be able to hear audible safety alarms. Baseline and annual audiometric evaluation is required
VISUAL ACUITY: Must be adequate to perform above listed tasks in a safe manner and take hand signals from ground man or flag man.
LIFTING: Must be able to routinely lift to 50 pounds from floor to waist, 30 pounds from wait level to shoulder height and carry 50 pounds for 20 feet.
RANGE OF MOTION: An objective range of motion measurement will be conducted and recorded using an inclinometer during the pre-hire/post offer FCE
RESPIRATION: Initial and recurring fit testing for protective breathing apparatus is required

Educations & Certification:

  • High school diploma or GED and three (3) years' experience operating heavy construction equipment; or equivalent combination of education and experience to be able to effectively perform the duties of the position.
  • Class A/B CDL required
  • Oil field experience preferred.
  • Arctic experience is preferred
  • A valid current commercial drivers license (CDL Class A/B) with the appropriate endorsements is required. Endorsements may include hazardous materials, bus, tankers, etc.
  • Current DOT Medical Card.
  • Current CITS Card


Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely exposed to moving mechanical parts and equipment. The employee is frequently exposed to severe outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes and airborne particles. The noise level is usually moderate to loud. When not performing equipment operating duties, operators will be tasked with performing Maintenance Technician 1 duties (see separate job description).
