Job Purpose

This role requires collaborating with cross-functional divisions to develop automotive exterior structures and components in the Exterior Design department that meet or exceed customer expectations while balancing marketability, styling, packaging, and vehicle performance for safety, reliability, NVH, and ride & handling along with profitability and manufacturing requirements.  Design responsibilities may include both structural and/or styled parts across the entire vehicle utilizing a variety of materials (steel, aluminium, plastics, composites, etc.) as well as manufacturing processes (stamping, injection moulding, extrusion, casting, etc.).  Additional responsibilities may include research & development of new technologies.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide project coordination by establishing schedule, deliverables, priorities, etc. for a team of designers within the Upperbody design area.  
  • Create and/or manage creation of 3D models, layouts, and 2D drawings for part design using CATIA.  Provide technical expertise, guidance, and mentoring to less experienced designers.
  • Correlate and negotiate with internal Honda contacts including other design departments, test departments, styling studio, factories and purchasing.  Consistently lead cross-functional meetings and document results, including clear concerns items, path forward, responsible individuals, and schedule accountability.  
  • Lead part development activities with suppliers, setting design targets and confirming prospect to achieve requirements, often providing oversight and leadership to other Honda associates.
  • Support part and vehicle verification, including developing countermeasures as necessary.  Actively lead C/M discussions, summarizing proposals and influence direction by decision matrix including the viewpoint of all stakeholders.
  • Estimate and manage part cost, weight, and investment throughout development, including review of supplier quotes.  Help lead cost correlation activities directly with purchasing departments and suppliers when appropriate.

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering 
  • Mechanical Engineering degree preferred 
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience
  • CATIA or other 3D CAD software, self-motivated, organized, multitasker, effective verbal and written communication.
     

Workstyle

  • Majority of work is performed in an office environment.  Some interaction in test lab, fabrication, and manufacturing environments.  5-10 hours/week OT as needed.  Some domestic travel, very limited international travel.
