The Packaging Designer/Senior Communications Associate is responsible for the design and maintenance of packaging and labeling for the company’s private label product portfolio. This involves adhering to, developing, and maintaining brand style guidelines for multiple brands. The designer adapts the brand standards to a wide variety of packaging formats and executes the brand vision through appealing packaging and design. This role requires collaboration with the brand management, product development, sourcing, and QA teams as well as outside suppliers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains product packaging and labeling for the company’s private label medical product portfolio in adherence with branding style guides. Routes artwork through internal and external shareholders for approval. Oversees artwork projects from graphic design and print proofs through production. Works on packaging projects for both new and existing products. Ensures that packaging files, logos, icons, and other brand assets are archived. Manages multiple design projects and meets project deadlines. (45%)
  • Maintains vendor/supplier relationships and frequently communicates and builds partnerships with external and internal audiences. Works collaboratively with multiple teams and departments to ensure accuracy, compliance, and adherence to brand standards. Communicates with internal teams to keep projects on schedule.  Identifies, communicates, and resolves any packaging issues. (20%)
  • Reviews current materials for adherence to standards; corrects and updates as necessary. Researches packaging, design trends, and state and federal regulatory requirements for medical product packaging. Collaborates with the Brand Management team to expand, update and refine packaging style guides for McKesson’s private label brands.  (20%)
  • Enforces brand standards and ensures uniformity and consistency of our brand elements. Reviews and approves print proofs and packaging samples. (10%)
  • Works with the Brand Management team to develop designs to promote the awareness and adoption of McKesson’s product brands. Supports team initiatives and other objectives as assigned by the Senior Brand Manager. (5%)

Minimum Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent and typically requires 2+ years of graphic design experience (packaging design highly preferred)

 

Critical Skills:

  • 2+ years’ experience working from design through final production
  • 2+ years’ experience with Adobe Creative Cloud with strong emphasis on Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop
  • 2+ years’ experience with Mac Operating Systems
  • 2+ years’ experience with basic color theory 
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office proficiency (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

Additional Knowledge & Skills

  • Product photography, image editing
  • Illustration capabilities
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Must be able to balance multiple priorities, perform under deadline pressure, and work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to follow instructions but also exercise independent judgment; sound reasoning and problem-solving skills; critical thinker who can adapt standards to a wide variety of packaging formats and develop new concepts
  • Resiliency; must respond well to criticism and feedback on designs
  • Experience with retail or private label packaging, especially medical products or CPG
  • Experience working in a graphic design firm, advertising agency, or in-house marketing team
  • Excellent skills in design conceptualization, branding, layout, color, and typography
  • Attention to detail and passion for branding and design

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, graphic arts, packaging design, visual communications arts, or a related field highly preferred
