Conemaugh Nason Medical Center is seeking a full-time Laboratory Manager. The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the overall operation and administration of the clinical laboratory, including personnel, equipment, safety, laboratory policies, testing, HR issues, productivity, and budget. The manager maintains quality results by participating in the hospital quality assurance program, consulting with pathologists, and reviewing quality control. The manager also maintains efficient and effective departmental operations in compliance with all state, federal, and local regulatory laws, and regulatory standards.

Essential Functions:

Formulates, plans, and recommends policies and procedures to improve laboratory services.

Prepares schedules, assigns duties, evaluations personnel, interview new employees, resolves personnel problems and makes recommendations regarding personnel matters.

Compiles annual budget for capital equipment and laboratory supplies/equipment in designated time frames.

Complies special reports and studies for administration, formulates long-range planning for the laboratory and participates in Hospital Department CQI, Infection Control, Patient Care CQI, Community Education/Wellness, and Compliance Committees.

Reviews all Quality Control results, maintenance logs and reagent logs monthly.

Coordinates the laboratory continuing education program and holds periodic lab meetings.

Reviews laboratory reports for accuracy, completeness, and proper documentation, with no documented deviation from standards.

Applies knowledge of State, Federal, and Joint Commission Regulations applicable to the laboratory.

Conducts, directs, and assists special projects as directed by the Pathologist.

Performs the duties of Technologist or Phlebotomist as necessary.

Maintains efficient cost control programs.

Attends all mandatory trainings and completes all required Life Talent education assignments within a timely manner. Keeps updated regarding Medical Center changes through meeting attendance and review of posted information; attends briefs, debriefs, and huddles.

Abides by and references the Employee Handbook and other pertinent facility policies, including clinical, non-clinical, safety, and infection control.

Job Requirements:
Minimum Education:
Bachelor of Science degree in a Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or biological, physical, or chemical science and graduate of an NAACLS approved lab training program. May also qualify under role 2, 3, or 4 of ASCP Board of Certification.

Minimum Work Experience:
Five years’ experience as Technologist, including relevant supervisory experience.
Additional coursework in business management/administration preferred.
Must keep current of laboratory developments through literature, professional meetings, and seminars.

Required Certifications:
Current ASCP or NCA certification.

Required Skills:
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Knowledge of clinical laboratory services.
Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize scheduling of work.
Ability to complete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner.
Ability to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail and maintain a positive attitude.
Ability to communicate and work effectively with all Hospital personnel, patients, and the general public.
Knowledge of laboratory equipment and information systems.
