Job Summary

Performs mechanical repairs, installations and maintenance (preventative and corrective) to the yard facilities, utilities, and production equipment. Performs repair or installation work utilizing mechanical skills and knowledge pertaining to one or all of the following: infrastructure, production equipment, rolling stock equipment, HVAC, diesel engines, conveyance, automated equipment, or other as required by the position. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.

Qualification Standards

This position requires a high school education and a trade school certificate in mechanical training or equivalent work experience performing mechanical repairs. Preferably, the candidate will have specialized training (such as diesel engines, automated equipment, etc.) and/or equivalent work experience in maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing systems in a production environment. Must be able to read and comprehend schematics, diagrams, piping plans, and other manufacturer-supplied documentation. Must understand and be willing to follow NASSCOs energy recognition, personal protective equipment, and lock/tag out procedures. The ability to fabricate using cutting is preferable, but is not required. Must have the ability to use measuring equipment such as tape measures, rulers, dial indicators, calipers, depth gauges, feeler gauges, and similar.Additionally, the ability to use basic hand tools as well as specialized tools - like gear pullers, hydraulic jacks, torque wrenches, impact wrenches, etc. is required. Other desirable skills include precision measurement and alignment, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, engine repair and overhaul, and equipment operation. Must have a valid Drivers License. Must be able to work in varied whole body positions to perform needed repair work. Must have the ability to work at heights, in confined spaces with limited visibility, and be able to work any shift. Must be able to understand written and verbal instructions, hear warning signals, and read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations, and warnings.

Essential Job Tasks

  • Inspect equipment to ensure safe and reliable operations.
  • Perform equipment service and repairs using test equipment, hand tools, pneumatic tools, and other power tools.
  • Fill out various required reports and documentation including work orders, inspection forms, discrepancy sheets, logbooks, and service forms.
  • Perform installations, repairs, and maintenance on all utility distribution throughout the facilities.
  • Perform repairs to buildings, structures, production equipment, and portable production support equipment in facilities.
  • Utilize mechanical knowledge to quickly diagnose failures.
  • Other tasks may be assigned relevant to the trade.

Materials, Tools Equipment, Work Aids

1.Tape measures, rulers, dial indicators, calipers, depth gauges, feeler gauges. Basic hand tools and specialized tools, including gear pullers, hydraulic jacks, torque wrenches, and impact wrenches. Personal protective equipment is required.

Physical/Mental Involvement

Works in all areas of the shipyard requiring repetitive or prolonged walking, climbing, standing, balancing, handling, reaching, pushing/pulling, bending, stooping/crouching, kneeling, reclining, sitting, seeing, hearing, and manual and finger dexterity. Requires to regularly lift/carry up to 100 lbs. assisted and up to 60 lbs. unassisted. Must be able to reason and make judgments while disassembling and reassembling parts and machines according to manufacturers specifications.Must be able to follow maps and adhere to state motor vehicle laws by reading street and highway signs. Must be able to maintain general safety awareness by hearing warning signals, reading and comprehending safety instructions, and avoid hazards commonly present an employees work area.

Marginal Job Tasks

Perform housekeeping, including sweeping, in all work areas. Attend safety quality and/or process improvement meetings as required.

Environmental Factors

Works outdoors more than 50% of the time with constant exposure to wind, water, heat, and moderate conditions. Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, various climates and temperatures, and low ventilation conditions, all of which may cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties. Exposure to automated machinery, vibrations, and high levels of constant noise.

PAY SCALE

$32.00 - $35.35

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the hourly range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
