Job Summary
Fabricates, assembles, removes, installs and repairs sheet metal products and equipment, such as air conditioning and heating, ventilation ducting, cabinets, shelves and other equipment. Operates hand and power tools. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.
Qualification Standards
Previous experience in metal works is an asset. Must be able to read blueprints and understand the layout of a ship with compartment identification. Must have the ability to use hand and power tools safely and efficiently, and identify nuts and bolts according to size. Basic reading, writing, (in English) and math skills required. Layout and drafting courses is helpful. Welding certification is desired, but not required. Must be able to work at heights, in confined spaces, and on any assigned shift. Must be able to hear warning signals, read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations and warnings.
Essential Job Tasks
- Set up tools, accessories and supplies at job site.
- Remove, modify, fabricate, and install ventilation ducts, cabinets, shelves and other equipment.
- Review blueprints and sketches, and layout material according to specifications.
- Cut, drill, rivet and weld sheet metal.
- Operate a variety of power tools.
- Other job duties as may be assigned relevant to the trade.
Materials, Tools Equipment, Work Aids
Power tools, hand tools, hardware, welding leads, sheet metal, a variety of saws, recording equipment, measuring equipment, tig welding and mig welding equipment and personal protective equipment.
Physical/Mental Involvement
Frequent to continuous lifting of up to 50 lbs. Standing, balancing, walking, climbing ladders or equipment, reaching above shoulder or out in front, manual dexterity, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, seeing, hearing and occasionally lowering self into confined spaces, crawling through small openings and working in reclined positions, as needed. Works in all areas of the shipyard and on board ships. Hearing warning signals and reading and comprehending safety instructions. Must be able to maintain general safety awareness and avoid hazards commonly present in employees work area.

Bolts, unbolts, loosens, and tightens to remove and install equipment. General housekeeping in work areas. May be required to attend safety, quality and/or process improvement meeting.
Environmental Factors
Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, various climates and temperatures, and low ventilation conditions, all of which can cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties. Exposure to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts and high levels of constant noise.
PAY SCALE
$30.20 - $33.55
This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the hourly range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
