Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Overview:

A Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing large machinery used in construction, mining, agriculture, and other industries. These professionals work on a variety of equipment, including bulldozers, cranes, excavators, loaders, and more.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Schedule, and oversee routine maintenance, including engine oil changes, brake inspections, tire changes, hydraulic and transmission fluid checks/replacement, and coolant/antifreeze checks.
  • Inspect, service, and repair safety features specific to the heavy equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair various electrical, hydraulic, fuel and other equipment systems, routine maintenance and avoid disruptions and downtime.
  • Inspect different parts of the equipment daily, weekly, and monthly to detect potential issues early on.
  • Inspect, Diagnose and Service equipment and specific features and systems.
  • Work with in-house or contract with technicians to complete the maintenance or repair tasks on schedule.
  • Maintains a safe work environment by verifying vehicle safety device operation, following standards and procedures.
  • Diagnosing the source of trouble and determining the extent of repairs required; replacing worn or broken parts such as piston rings, bearings, or other engine parts; grinding and adjusting valves; rebuilding carburetors; overhauling transmissions; and repairing fuel injections, lighting, and ignition systems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Change and fill batteries and general maintenance on forklifts and stock selectors.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must have High School Diploma or GED (May substitute experience for education on a year-by-year basis).
  • Equivalent training/ experience, and five years of general experience of which two years must be related experience are required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be able to demonstrate a good attitude and an ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Position requires self-motivation and the ability to work effectively under a minimum of supervision.
  • Must be able to multi-task efficiently, work in a fast-paced environment on multiple projects, and have a strong attention for detail.

Work Environment:

Works in a shop/warehouse environment as well as remote construction projects. Work involves repetitive motions and standing for long periods of time. Work is of a physical nature and requires the incumbent be able to lift 50 lbs overhead and/or repetitively. Outside work in hot and cold or wet weather is occasionally required.
