We are seeking an experienced engineer to join the Specialty Industries team. This person will be the subject matter expert and technical representative primarily responsible for developing and proposing solutions to complex hazards or engineering challenges, for example, battery energy storage systems, semiconductor, waste to energy, and other industries/hazards critical to FM’s specialty industries book of business.

The role also ensures a comprehensive understanding of engineering solutions, policies, and procedures within the engineering/underwriting and customer communities. This includes developing and delivering products and solutions for the benefit of our worldwide operations and to help clients reduce property loss costs. Key responsibilities include:

  • Innovative Hazard Solutions: Develop and propose solutions to complex hazards and engineering challenges, focusing on emerging technologies such as photovoltaics and/or battery energy storage systems.
  • Knowledge Dissemination: Ensure full understanding of engineering solutions, policies, and procedures within the engineering/underwriting and customer communities.
  • Efficiency and Effectiveness: Identify challenges and opportunities impacting engineering/underwriting effectiveness and efficiency and contribute to developing responsive strategies.
  • Technical Guidance: Provide creative, flexible, and reliable technical/procedural guidance within areas of expertise.
  • Leadership in Development: Contribute to and often lead the development of improved understanding of hazards and propose new solutions, procedures, systems, or products.
  • Task Force Leadership: Lead task forces charged with solving specific technical, procedural, or product development problems or challenges.
  • Corporate Representation: Ensure FM is represented both internally and externally, such as attending and presenting technical papers at industry conferences, participating on committees, code setting, and other industry organizations that benefit our ability to understand our clients’ risks.
  • Troubleshooting and Problem Solving: Act as a troubleshooter, problem solver, and catalyst within areas of defined responsibility, resulting in more effective, efficient, and responsive engineering/underwriting.
  • Collaboration: Support FM Approvals, research and technical standards development, and provide technical support to operations engineering and claims.

  • Advanced degree in Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years relatable high hazard engineering experience 
  • Extensive experience in hazard identification and risk management with a focus on Fire and Natural Hazards for the targeted industries
  • Proven track record of developing innovative engineering solutions
  • Strong leadership and project management skills
  • Robust technical writing and editing expertise
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Open to travel domestically and globally

Compensation, Grade, and Job Title will be determined based on qualifications, experience, and technical skillset.
