My client, a leading UK trade body based in Buckinghamshire, is currently recruiting for a Membership Director.
The Role of Membership Director
Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will manage a team of nine including four direct reports (Director of Member Engagement, Head of Learning and Development, Head of Events, Head of Membership). Responsible for delivering annual revenues of £3.7m, you will drive member engagement and value.
Responsibilities
Member recruitment
- Provide strategic direction to the Head of Membership in the delivery of business plans, budgets, and reporting.
- Use market segmentation and analysis to inform and support the development, planning, and implementation of effective and aligned sales and marketing strategies to meet membership growth goals.
- Ensure the quality and efficiency of a seamless membership process for new and renewing members, using online processes and automation wherever possible.
Member engagement and retention
- Provide strategic direction to the Director of Member Engagement.
- Provide trend analysis, projections, and insights into demographics, sectors, tenure, and membership behaviours. Ensure that this member intelligence is shared with the wider organisation.
- Take a leading role in developing and delivering a unified, multi-channel marketing, communications, and member engagement strategy.
- Increase member connection and commitment, ensuring the member experience is consistent, integrated, and aligned with the Association’s strategic goals.
- Lead the development of a strategic account management approach to the Association’s largest and most complex members.
- Lead the development of a strategic account management approach to the Association’s key commercial partners and sponsors.
Member Events
- Provide strategic direction to the Head of Events in the delivery of business plans, budgets, and reporting.
- Ensure that the Association’s wide array of physical and online events deliver value to attendees, sponsors, and exhibitors, and meet all commercial targets.
- Deliver robust event metrics and use them as a framework for continuous improvement.
Learning and Development
- Provide strategic direction to the Head of Learning and Development in the delivery of business plans, budgets, and reporting.
- Ensure an effective strategy is developed and executed to support the current and anticipated learning and development needs of our members, across multiple channels.
- Deliver robust L&D metrics and use them as a framework for continuous improvement.
Financial management
- Working with the Chief Finance Officer, ensure an appropriate costing strategy is in place for all types of membership and services, including membership subscriptions and learning and development.
- Ensure streamlined and effective billing processes, cost management, debtor management, and accurate and timely financial forecasting is in place for all member services.
- Ensure the business areas within the Member Services remit perform against their budget financial plans, and operate with a cost-conscious and commercial mindset.
- Grow revenues in line with the Association’s strategic goals, to ensure the continued growth of and investment in added-value member services.
Leadership
- Contribute to the leadership of the Association through active participation in leadership meetings.
- Lead, motivate, develop, and coach the team to achieve excellence in delivery and to ensure the right level of skills, knowledge, and engagement are maintained across the Member Services business area.
- Promote and personally role-model a positive and inclusive culture of support, high performance, and continuous improvement, where all members of the team can contribute and thrive.
Operational management
- Review operational processes and administration to ensure these are streamlined and automated where possible to drive operational efficiency.
Person Specification
- Proven experience of strategic leadership in a membership function within a Trade Association or membership organisation.
- Strong commercial and financial acumen.
- Demonstrable experience of developing new value-add member services/initiatives and appropriate pricing models.
