An exciting and impactful leadership opportunity is available within a dynamic and high-performing organisation. The Interim Assistant Director of Finance (Local Government) will play a critical role in supporting the Executive Director of Strategy & Resources, ensuring the effective financial stewardship and long-term sustainability of the organisation.

This position requires a highly skilled and experienced finance professional, capable of providing strategic leadership across a wide range of financial responsibilities, including budgeting, financial planning, risk management, and financial strategy development. The role is key to ensuring that the organisation meets its operational and financial goals, while adhering to all necessary regulatory and legislative standards.

Key Responsibilities Interim Assistant Director of Finance (Local Government):

  • Strategic Leadership: Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive financial strategy that ensures the sustainability of the organisation over the medium term. Contribute actively to shaping and driving the organisation's strategic vision in collaboration with senior leadership.
  • Financial Management & Budgeting: Oversee the service budget of approximately £5m, with indirect responsibility for a total expenditure of £982m. Lead the budget-setting process, ensuring timely and accurate intelligence to senior management and stakeholders.
  • Audit & Risk Management: Ensure robust internal controls and an effective Audit and Risk Management framework to protect the organisation's financial resources. Work closely with internal and external auditors to secure an unmodified audit opinion and implement agreed action plans.
  • Policy & Strategy Development: Lead on financial policy and strategy development to align resources with organisational goals, ensuring compliance with professional standards and regulations. Foster continuous improvement in financial operations and service delivery.
  • Performance & Customer Focus: Ensure that outstanding customer service is delivered across the organisation, both internally and externally. Lead the development of improvement plans and oversee the delivery of financial services that meet the highest standards.
  • Leadership & Team Development: Lead and develop a team of approximately 40 staff, ensuring a high level of professional expertise across all areas of financial management. Encourage innovation and continuous learning to drive financial performance and service excellence.

The Ideal Candidate Interim Assistant Director of Finance (Local Government):

  • A full member of a recognised professional body (e.g., CIPFA) with significant post-qualification experience in finance management.
  • Extensive experience in strategic management, with a proven track record of leading financial operations in large, complex organisations (preferably public sector).
  • Expertise in managing significant budgets, ensuring value for money, and implementing effective risk management strategies.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and build positive relationships with senior management, stakeholders, and external partners.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading successful change management initiatives and driving performance improvement.
