Principal Building Control Surveyor / Building Control Surveyor

Location: Citywide

Salary: Competitive

Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday (with flexibility based on business needs)

We are seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Principal Building Control Surveyor to join our dynamic Building Control Team. This role is essential in ensuring compliance with building regulations and delivering high-quality services in relation to health, safety, sustainability, and accessibility. You will be responsible for managing complex projects from inception to completion and providing expert guidance throughout the construction phase.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Building Regulation Compliance:
  • Ensure the Council meets its statutory duties as a Local Building Control Authority by overseeing the processing of building regulation applications. This includes offering expert advice on regulatory areas such as health, safety, energy efficiency, and accessibility.
  • Project Management:
  • Take responsibility for Building Control projects from conception to completion. This will include negotiating complex technical solutions with developers, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure full compliance with relevant building regulations.
  • Expert Witness & Enforcement:
  • Act as an expert witness on behalf of the Council in legal proceedings related to the enforcement of building regulations. You will play a key role in ensuring that any violations are addressed and that appropriate corrective actions are taken.
  • Specialist Commissioning:
  • When working on complex projects, you will be responsible for commissioning structural and fire safety specialists to ensure that projects meet the necessary safety standards.
  • Team Support & Leadership:
  • Provide mentorship and support to less experienced officers and administrators within the Building Control Team, sharing your expertise and helping to develop the skills of your colleagues.
  • Regulatory Guidance & Policy Creation:
  • Contribute to the creation and revision of policies and guidance documents related to building control and regulations, ensuring that they reflect current industry standards and best practices.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Professional Qualifications:
  • Membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) or Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) is required for this role.
  • Experience:
  • A strong background in building control, with proven experience managing projects and providing expert advice on regulatory matters. Experience in negotiating complex technical solutions and ensuring compliance with building regulations is essential.
  • Technical Knowledge:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of building regulations and compliance requirements in areas such as health, safety, sustainability, and energy efficiency. Familiarity with structural and fire safety considerations is a must.
  • Communication Skills:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. You will need to interact with a variety of stakeholders, including developers, contractors, residents, and other government authorities.
  • Problem Solving & Negotiation:
  • The ability to identify and resolve complex technical and regulatory issues is vital. You will need to work collaboratively with others to find effective solutions and ensure projects move forward smoothly.

Health & Safety:

  • Regular use of visual display equipment
  • May involve working alone and potential for verbal or physical abuse in specific situations
  • Will require adherence to strict health and safety standards during site visits and inspections

Work Pattern & Travel:

  • Standard Monday to Friday work schedule, with flexibility based on business needs
  • Regular travel to various sites for inspections and meetings will be required
