Technical Directors - Mechanical / Electrical
Bicester

We seek experienced Technical Directors (Mechanical/Electrical) to be based in our Bicester office. You will take a team management and leadership role in the development, design, and coordination of engineering project services, assisting the Directors with business strategy and management.

Your excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both with colleagues and clients, and experience working on innovative projects with leading client organisations and contractors, will equip you to take a proactive role in forging client relationships.

You will possess good commercial awareness, in addition to having robust technical knowledge relevant to building services design, and be capable of incorporating those technologies into the commercial office sector. The position will ideally suit someone who is currently working in consultancy and is prepared to work ‘hands-on.'

The ideal candidate will be a Chartered Engineer, educated to degree level in Building Services Engineering or equivalent, and hold membership of relevant institutions (MCIBSE or MIMechE), as well as having experience of data centre or other mission-critical projects.

Role Responsibilities

  • Takes a team management and leadership role in the development, design, and coordination of engineering project services. Assists the Directors with business strategy and management.
  • Carries out cost and profit diagnosis on projects, including feasibility studies and preparation of project fee proposals.
  • Works closely with clients and the project team to establish project requirements.
  • Reviews status advised by project personnel and external parties and modifies schedules or plans as required. Prepares project reports for management, clients, or others.
  • Develops and specifies applications of controls, instruments, and operating systems for all building engineering services purposes.
  • Conducts surveys, tests, and reports on existing electrical/mechanical installations.
  • Manages fiscal and commercial aspects of projects to ensure they return the target margin.
  • Leads and delivers hands-on monitoring of construction and installation on projects.
  • Liaises with existing clients to establish long-term relationships and identify future upcoming projects.
  • Builds relationships with future client prospects and engages in general business development.
  • Specifies activities to ensure that manufacturing, construction, installation, and operational testing conform to functional specifications and customer requirements.
  • Represents the company at technical meetings with customers, professional teams, and contractors.
  • Conducts engineering calculations to ensure drawings meet required robust industry and legal standards.
  • Provides hands-on involvement in local office management in conjunction with other senior management team members.
  • Supports clients in tendering and procurement of MEP contractors and MEP equipment.
  • Leads the coordination of engineering services and contributes hands-on to concept and detailed designs.
  • Ensures risk and performance monitoring analysis occurs through effective systems of internal control and delegation.
  • Mentors and develops junior members of the engineering team.
  • Produces technical white papers to promote technical capabilities.
  • Contributes hands-on to the sector management team in conjunction with other team members.
  • Conducts surveys and due diligence reports of existing data centres.
  • Presents technical papers at industry events when opportunities arise.
  • Takes a holistic view in the selection and application of engineering concepts and solutions.
  • Supports the delivery of projects in alignment with the expectations of the Project Delivery Process, covering project management, financial management, QA/QC, and technical reviews.

Role Requirements

  • BSc/BEng in an appropriate engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
  • MCIBSE/MIEE or HND/HNC with appropriate experience or equivalent.
  • Chartered Engineer status.
  • Experience with data centre or other mission-critical projects.
  • Significant experience in specification design for a range of building types.
  • Experience managing projects abroad (desirable).
  • Sound knowledge and working application of key health and safety issues and legislation.
  • Appreciation and working knowledge of contract and business law.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Flexible and self-motivated approach to work.
  • Proficient in IT-based calculation and spreadsheet software.
  • Strong understanding of BS standards and UK regulations/codes.
  • Experience and understanding of invoicing and credit control.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines.
  • Strong presentation, leadership, and mentoring skills.
  • Background in consulting or construction is preferred.
  • Understanding of international working and business operations of a global consultancy.
  • Act ethically and follow the principles of the Ethics Charter and Ethics in Practice Guidelines.
