Estates & Maintenance Assistant – To Start January 2025
Hallfield School, Edgbaston, Birmingham
£24,612 - £27,428 per annum dependent on experience, skills and qualifications
40 hrs per week 10:00am – 7:00pm, Monday to Friday (with the need to be flexible to occasionally work outside these hours as required), working all year round with 30 days’ annual leave plus paid bank holidays.
The Role
Hallfield School is seeking to appoint a skilled Estates & Maintenance Assistant to assist with day-to-day maintenance and compliance of the School estate. Multi-trade experience and a formal qualification such as NVQ in any trade (carpentry, plastering, plumbing or construction) would highly desirable.
The role offers a varied day, within a busy environment, covering maintenance, grounds work and compliance checks and testing. It would suit an individual who takes pride in their work, is able to show initiative whilst working supportively and flexibly within a team.
Key responsibilities:
- Carrying out routine maintenance, including carpentry; plumbing; basic electrical; decorating; drains/gutters
- Event set up and car park duties
- Responding to emergency breakdowns/incidents and providing relief cleaning in emergencies
- Regular compliance tests, audits and checks
- Driving the School minibus as required and carrying out vehicle safety checks

The Person
The key skills, experience and qualities required to be the Estates & Maintenance Assistant:
- Experience of working in a similar role, ideally within an educational setting
- Understanding of Health & Safety requirements and principles in a school environment including COSHH
- Knowledge of emergency procedures such as fire evacuation
- Experience of the building trade with a wide range of skills for example plumbing, basic electrics, plastering and general building work with a willingness to work across all disciplines (a formal qualification in one of more of the areas would be advantageous)
- Competent with a wide range of tools and machinery relevant to the role
- Effective verbal communication skills
- Organised and flexible, with a willingness to work unsociable hours if required
- A full driving licence is essential
