The Pastoral Lead is responsible for promoting the well-being of all students and fostering a positive, inclusive, and safe school environment. This role requires a commitment to supporting students' emotional, social, and behavioural needs, ensuring that they have the necessary support to thrive academically and personally.
Key Responsibilities:Student Well-being:
- Oversee and coordinate pastoral care throughout the school, ensuring a nurturing and supportive environment.
- Provide individual support and guidance to students experiencing emotional, social, or behavioural difficulties.
- Act as a trusted point of contact for students seeking advice or help with personal issues.
- Develop and implement well-being strategies and mental health initiatives across the school.
Behaviour and Attendance:
- Monitor student attendance and punctuality, working with staff, students, and parents to address persistent absence.
- Support teachers in managing challenging behaviour by developing appropriate strategies and intervention plans.
- Lead on the implementation of the schools behaviour policy, promoting positive behaviour and handling serious incidents in line with school protocols.
Safeguarding and Child Protection:
- Work closely with the school's designated safeguarding lead (DSL) to ensure the welfare and safety of students.
- Identify students at risk and ensure timely referrals to relevant external agencies when necessary.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records related to student safeguarding concerns and interventions.
Family and Community Engagement:
- Build strong relationships with parents/carers to ensure a collaborative approach to supporting students needs.
- Act as a liaison between the school, parents, and external agencies such as social services, mental health teams, and counselling services.
- Organise and participate in parent evenings, workshops, and support groups related to student well-being and pastoral care.
Staff Development and Support:
- Provide guidance and training to staff on pastoral care, mental health, and behaviour management.
- Collaborate with teachers, support staff, and senior leadership to promote a holistic approach to student welfare.
- Lead staff briefings and meetings on pastoral issues, providing updates on key students and relevant training.
Curriculum and Student Development:
- Work with teachers to integrate social and emotional learning (SEL) into the curriculum.
- Coordinate and deliver workshops or assemblies focused on well-being, mental health, anti-bullying, diversity, and inclusion.
- Organise extracurricular activities or mentoring programs aimed at supporting vulnerable students.
Monitoring and Reporting:
- Track and report on the effectiveness of pastoral interventions and student progress.
- Use data on behaviour, attendance, and well-being to inform strategic decisions.
- Provide regular updates to senior leadership, governing bodies, and external agencies as required.
- Essential:
- Experience in a pastoral, safeguarding, or counselling role within an educational setting.
- Knowledge of child protection procedures and safeguarding legislation.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and rapport with students, staff, and parents.
- Understanding of behaviour management strategies and experience in dealing with challenging behaviour.
- Desirable:
- A qualification in pastoral care, social work, counselling, or a related field.
- Experience working with external agencies (e.g., social services, CAMHS).
- Experience in leading or managing a team in an educational context.
- Empathetic and approachable with strong listening skills.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple cases, and prioritise effectively.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.
The Pastoral Lead will be committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check.
