Salary: £35,116 - £38,249 per annum

The Role

The University are looking for a dedicated and innovative adviser to support students with disabilities and long-term medical conditions. The role, supported by the Disability and Inclusion Manager, will be our primary point of contact for students on matters relating to disability and inclusion, managing student casework, developing systems and processes, and working with colleagues across the University to develop inclusive practice and student-centric solutions with compassion at its heart. The role will help ensure students access the support they need and are entitled to receive, with engagement with Disabled Students Allowance being an important strand of work.

The role will work closely with other teams within Student Success including Advice and Wellbeing and Learning Development, with other key contacts including Faculty, Library, Estates and Facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide a confidential support and advisory service for all students who wish to engage in the Disability and Inclusion provision. This would include offering 1-1 student appointments, managing caseloads, and maintaining up-to-date, clear, and accurate student records.
  • Co-ordinate internal and external support, including creating learning support plans and communicating the support requirements / reasonable adjustments effectively. Monitoring effectiveness of reasonable adjustments on an ongoing basis.
  • To work cohesively and effectively with both their internal and external stakeholders to provide appropriate support.
  • Offer initial screenings and referral for diagnostic assessments. Alongside providing advice to students on the process of how to obtain further support.
  • Proactively support students to engage with Disabled Student Allowance. Empowering and supporting students to arrange their support, alongside providing advice on other funding available.
  • To provide basic needs assessments for any student who is not eligible for DSA.
  • To maintain accurate and timely records which track student access to support. Recording and managing highly restricted information with a full understanding and commitment to upholding Data Protection and GDPR regulations.
  • To assist with the management of issues relating to the compliance of the Equality Act 2010 and maintain contemporary knowledge of best practice and legislative developments relating to disability.
  • Assist in the coordination of exam and timetable adjustments.
  • Support the Disability and Inclusion Manager in the completion of Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans.
  • Lead on specific projects / interdepartmental groups as required including contribution to the development and delivery of workshops, activities, and resources. Actively taking part in promotional activities to raise awareness around disability, including discussing inclusive practice.
  • Providing training and guidance to academic and professional service staff on a range of topics and to be a point of advice and guidance to staff members in Disability and Inclusion related matters.

Skills and Qualifications

  • A good honours degree (or equivalent experience relevant to the role)
  • Proven recent relevant work experience in a student focused organisation with demonstrable experience of working with Disabled students.
  • A working knowledge and application of disability related issues, ideally within the HE sector, with particular regard to current legislation.
  • An in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Disabled Students Allowance process.
