We are seeking a highly professional and inspirational Senior SaLT to perform in a key leadership role within a multi-disciplinary rehabilitation team.

Main Purpose:

The Senior Specialist Speech & Language Therapist will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, providing speech and language therapy within a neurobehavioral model to individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI). The role involves leading the Speech and Language Therapy (SaLT) provision within the service, consulting with internal and external professionals, family members, and the individuals supported.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Apply the neurobehavioral approach to brain injury, utilizing current research and best practices.
  • Manage and prioritise a caseload of individuals with complex mental and physical health needs and/or challenging behaviour.
  • Use evidence-based practice to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate interventions.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to formulate appropriate rehabilitation goals, care plans, and communication and dysphagia therapy programmes.
  • Engage individuals in assessment, rehabilitation, and discharge planning, overcoming communication barriers and ensuring informed consent.
  • Complete swallowing assessments, providing recommendations and training for safe management and rehabilitation of dysphagia.
  • Maintain responsibilities in risk management, safeguarding, and health and safety.
  • Ensure the maintenance of equipment and compliance with Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) requirements.

Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Work flexibly and creatively as an autonomous clinical professional, potentially as a sole clinician.
  • Lead the planning, development, and evaluation of SaLT services within the team.
  • Promote quality, effective working, continuous improvement, and change management.
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships within a collaborative, multidisciplinary framework.
  • Participate in clinical governance, quality assurance, and service development initiatives.
  • Act as a role model, demonstrating professional accountability and responsibility.

Evidence Research and Development:

  • Undertake research and audit projects relevant to speech and language therapy.
  • Participate in sustainability initiatives and contribute to SaLT-related decision-making.
  • Liaise with relevant clinical teams, departments, and support networks.

Facilitation of Learning:

  • Support a culture of learning and continuous improvement, offering constructive feedback and participating in staff development.
  • Promote awareness of SaLT within the team and support the education and training of others.
  • Engage in supervision, reflecting on personal performance and development needs.

Personal Development, Supervision, and Training:

  • Take accountability for personal practice and engage in ongoing professional development.
  • Participate in clinical supervision, training sessions, and mandatory courses as required.
  • Maintain professional competence and seek support when necessary.

About You:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • HCPC registration.
  • Achieved Dysphagia Competencies.
  • Extensive experience in hospital or residential settings, with specialist knowledge of SaLT models and interventions in ABI.
  • Experience with speech and language therapy outcome measures.
  • A minimum of 4 years of qualified experience, including complex case management.
  • At least 2 years of experience working with adults with neurological conditions or 4+ years in an alternative clinical setting.
