I am delighted to be partnering exclusively with a leading not-for-profit organisation in their search for a Director of Estates.

My client is a dynamic institution dedicated to providing exceptional education and opportunities for their pupil’s personal growth and development. As the Director of Estates, you will form part of the Strategic Leadership Team and play a pivotal role in the preparation of an organisation wide Estate Strategy and Asset Management Plan.

Working closely with their Chief Finance Officer and reporting directly into the CEO, you and your team of Estates Managers will be responsible for all aspects of estates and facilities management, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements across multiple sites.

Key Responsibilities of the Director of Estates:

  • To be the lead officer in managing estate projects relating to refurbishment, expansion and building, ensuring capital money is used effectively and appropriately.
  • To be responsible for developing, reviewing and monitoring property and estate related policies to ensure compliance and integrity at both a national and local level.
  • To manage health and safety across the organisation ensuring compliance in all areas.
  • To be responsible for providing premises related due diligence pre-conversion.
  • In conjunction with the CFO, develop bids for capital funding opportunities.
  • Develop and manage a 5-year capital and maintenance programme.
  • To provide regular reports to the Business, Risk and Finance Committee on the progress of the 5-year plan and all relevant areas.
  • To maintain the Trust Risk Register in relation to the Estate.
  • Lead on the project management of building projects, with support from external advisors where needed. Acting as project lead, paying particular attention to regulatory requirements, insurance, quality, and compliance.
  • Working in conjunction with the Executive Leadership Team, plan works programmes, agree budget priorities and prepare maintenance and capital expenditure plans.
  • In conjunction with the CFO identify, negotiate, manage and review procurement or contract renewals in relation to estates and facilities in line with financial policies and procedures.
  • Lead on the preparation of contract specifications and development of service contracts.
  • Identify the need, and be responsible for, securing appropriate licenses, warranties, and insurance.
  • To provide leadership and management to the estates team.

Key Requirements for the Director of Estates:

  • It is essential that you have extensive experience working at a similar level for a complex, multi- site organisation.
  • You will have a strong track record of achievement in strategic estates management, with knowledge of both capital development and facilities management.
  • Experience of leadership and management of a wide variety of professional staff / service providers in a complex, multi-location organisation.
  • It is desirable that you have previously worked within the public sector or not-for-profit organisations which are highly regulated.
  • It is desirable that you have a recognised project management qualification or other relevant disciplines, including Health & Safety.
  • You will have excellent written report writing skills and be able to build and maintain relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • You will pride yourself on being a strategic thinker with a proven ability to innovate and manage change, whilst also being happy to be hands-on.
  • It is essential that you are car owner/driver.
