Contract Type: Full-time

South Gloucestershire Council is seeking a qualified accountant with experience in preparing the statement of accounts and strong ICT skills, including proficiency in Excel, SQL, and Power BI. The successful candidate will work alongside the Senior Closing Accountant to address a backlog of audit queries and develop reports for the council’s new finance system, aiding in the closing of the 2024/25 financial year. This role also involves the development of accounting practices, such as consolidating separate ledgers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Resolving audit queries.
  • Creating Microsoft Power BI reports.
  • Developing and improving accounting practices and policies.
  • Supporting the Finance Business Partner in preparing revenue and capital budgets, as well as budget monitoring.
  • Providing financial advice to budget holders, including guidance on capital resources and external funding bids.
  • Supervising Finance Officers and overseeing Finance Assistants’ work.
  • Ensuring provider payments are accurate and timely each year.

Key Areas of Focus:

  • Financial advice and support services to council departments.
  • Budget setting, management, and reporting.
  • Preparation of final accounts.
  • Statutory compliance (S151 functions), treasury management, and VAT/taxation.
  • Maintenance of financial systems, including asset management and S106 monitoring.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Qualified Accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent).
  • Strong ICT skills, including proficiency in Excel, SQL, and Power BI.
  • Experience in preparing financial statements and dealing with audit queries.
