Role & Client Overview:

As a Functional Skills Tutor, you will deliver high-quality teaching in English and Maths, embedding ICT where appropriate. You will work with learners to develop their skills and knowledge, ensuring they achieve the qualifications required to succeed in the workplace.

You will contribute to curriculum development, support individual learner progress, and play an active role in safeguarding and promoting learner welfare.

Key Responsibilities:

Teaching & Learning

  • Plan and deliver engaging Functional Skills sessions in English and Maths.
  • Embed ICT in all sessions to support digital literacy.
  • Contextualise Functional Skills to employability, PDBW, and vocational subjects.
  • Ensure lesson plans align with overarching Schemes of Work.
  • Provide supportive and individualised learning experiences.
  • Regularly assess learners' work to meet awarding body and Ofsted standards.
  • Maintain a stimulating and safe learning environment.
  • Encourage learner engagement and motivation.
  • Manage learner behaviour effectively, implementing strategies for positive learning experiences.
  • Support learners with pastoral care and academic progress.

Compliance & Quality Assurance

  • Work towards company KPIs and Individual Performance Plan targets.
  • Ensure compliance with Ofsted, ESFA, and funding body requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date learner records.
  • Implement policies on Safeguarding, Equality & Diversity, and Health & Safety.
  • Contribute to the Self-Assessment Process in line with Ofsted’s Education Inspection Framework.
  • Support learner decision-making through voice forums, surveys, and curriculum reviews.

Collaboration & Development

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to enhance curriculum delivery.
  • Participate in team meetings, curriculum development, and standardisation activities.
  • Support learner progression opportunities into further study or employment.
  • Manage resources, ensuring security of equipment and materials.
  • Provide cover for absent staff where required.
  • Attend two mandatory 'away days’ per year as part of professional development.

Essential/Desirable Criteria:

Essential:

  • Relevant experience teaching Functional Skills, Maths, or English.
  • Minimum 2 years of teaching experience in 14-19 provision.
  • Passion and desire to teach.
  • Willingness to undertake relevant teaching qualifications.
  • Level 3 qualification in English or Maths, with at least Level 2 in the second subject (CPD required to achieve Level 3 in both).
  • Ability to engage and motivate learners with different needs and backgrounds.
  • Strong classroom management skills, with the ability to address challenging behaviour effectively.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.

Desirable:

  • Full Teaching Qualification (Cert Ed, CTLLS, DTLLS, PGCE).
  • Experience working with learners with learning difficulties or disabilities (LDDs).
  • Experience in mentoring or supervising young people.
  • Volunteering or experience supporting learners in extracurricular activities.
