Class 2 HGV Mechanic

We are looking to recruit a Class 2 HGV Mechanic who will be responsible for the maintenance, servicing, and repair of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) up to Class 2 (rigid trucks over 3.5 tonnes). The role involves diagnosing mechanical issues, ensuring roadworthiness, and minimising vehicle downtime to maintain fleet efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

Vehicle Maintenance & Repairs

Perform routine inspections, servicing, and repairs on Class 2 HGVs.

Diagnose and fix mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults.

Replace worn or damaged components, including brakes, suspension, steering, and drivetrain systems.

Conduct engine and transmission repairs as required.

Safety & Compliance

Ensure all vehicles meet operator licensing regulations.

Carry out MOT preparation and compliance checks.

Perform safety inspections in line with legal and company standards.

Diagnostics & Troubleshooting

Use diagnostic tools to identify faults in vehicle systems.

Investigate breakdowns and determine the best repair solutions.

Test repaired vehicles to ensure they are roadworthy.

Record-Keeping & Reporting

Maintain accurate service records and job sheets.

Report defects and potential issues to management.

Assist in stock control of parts and consumables.

Workshop & Field Support

Work both in the workshop and attend roadside breakdowns when necessary.

Ensure tools and work areas are kept clean and organised.

Support the training of junior mechanics when required.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education:NVQ Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair or equivalent.

Experience:Experience of working with HGVs, preferably Class 2 vehicles.

Technical Skills:

Strong knowledge of HGV mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.

Ability to read technical manuals and wiring diagrams.

Proficiency with diagnostic tools and software.

Licenses & Certifications:

Class 2 HGV driving license (preferred but not essential).

IRTEC or relevant mechanical certification (desirable).

Soft Skills:

Strong problem-solving and attention to detail.

Good teamwork and communication skills.

Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Work Environment:

  • Workshop-based with occasional roadside repairs.
  • May involve shift work, weekends, and on-call duties.
  • Requires manual handling and working in challenging conditions.
