SEN Teaching Assistant

The position is within a special educational needs school based in Cardiff and will be highly challenging, but so rewarding. You will get the opportunity to work alongside pupils with severe learning difficulties and really make a positive difference in their lives.

While this role is more challenging, class sizes are much smaller than mainstream, so you’ll really get the opportunity to make an impact on these pupils lives and provide the best education experience.  

Key Responsibilities

-          Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with a variety of additional learning needs (ALN)

-          Promoting independence and care where needed

-          Support pupils with their physical and personal care needs

-          Promote positive behaviour and ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment

-          Build positive relationships with students, parents and carers, and other members of staff

-          Assist with preparation and delivery of lessons including therapeutic activities, under the guidance of the class teacher

-          Be involved in a variety of sensory classes from soft play, rebound therapy to hydro-therapy (definitely bring your swimming kit)

-          Actively involve and care for pupils with severe learning difficulties and provide the best school experience for pupils

The ideal candidate will have two or more of the following:

  • Hold a valid driving licence with access to own vehicle (preferred not essential)
  • A good understanding of supporting individuals with additional learning needs (ALN)
  • Understanding of different teaching strategies and interventions for individuals with complex learning needs
  • A willingness to learn and adapt to the needs of each individual student
  • Be warm, kind and caring individual with a passion about providing the best experience possible for the pupils
  • The ability to remain calm when faced with pressured situations
  • Ability to work as part of team

The following qualifications or knowledge of the following will be highly desirable, but not essential:

  • Picture Exchange Communication (PECS)
  • Makaton or BSL (to any level)
  • Autism Awareness/ASC Training
  • Team Teach / MAPA
  • Buccal midazolam training
  • Hydrotherapy and physio training
  • Rebound therapy
  • Peg & Tube Feeding

Due to the nature of this role and enhanced DBS check will take place prior to employment.
