Day-to-day of the role:
  • Perform material and assembly failure analysis in a detailed, systematic, and thorough manner.
  • Support the broader business via manufacturing, engineering, and quality teams in technical investigations.
  • Produce technical reports for a variety of internal customers, both technical and non-technical.
  • Manage equipment, including grinding and polishing equipment, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscope.
  • Work collaboratively using other functions to ensure robust and well-rounded analysis.
  • Act as a point of contact as a Materials Engineer to provide on-hand technical advice.
  • Engage and support risk assessments for technical processes and equipment.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Experience in material analysis through conventional techniques and inspection methods such as micro section and light microscopy.
  • Proficient in the operation and interpretation of SEM and EDX techniques and data.
  • Good understanding of the fundamentals of high temperature joining techniques including brazing and welding.
  • Experience with assembly and failure mode of vacuum electronic assemblies.
  • Knowledge of the metallurgy of copper, nickel-copper alloys, steels, and braze alloys.
  • Experience in processing components for the assembly of vacuum electronics.
  • Skilled in adhesive selection and properties analysis.
  • Ability to assess, interpret, and review technical drawings to confirm design intent and manufacturing suitability.
  • Familiarity with mechanical destructive testing and non-destructive techniques, their suitability, and uses.
