As a Secondary SEN Teaching Assistant (SEN TA), you will play a vital role in providing one-to-one and small-group support for students with additional learning needs. Your role will involve working closely with teachers and SENCOs to implement tailored learning strategies, helping students to engage, progress, and develop confidence in their education. You will be instrumental in ensuring that students feel included, valued, and supported in their academic and social development.

Responsibilities of the Secondary SEN Teaching Assistant (SEN TA):

  • Provide individualised and group support to students with SEN, including Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, and SEMH.
  • Assist in the delivery of tailored learning interventions, ensuring students can access the curriculum effectively.
  • Support students in developing social skills, emotional resilience, and positive learning behaviours.
  • Work closely with classroom teachers, SENCOs, and other professionals to implement Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and individual learning strategies.
  • Offer mentorship and guidance, helping students to build confidence and motivation in their learning.
  • Adapt teaching materials and resources to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment where all students can thrive.
  • Support students in managing emotions and behaviour, using positive behaviour management strategies.
  • Assist with classroom organisation, lesson preparation, and academic monitoring.
  • Provide feedback to teachers and parents, ensuring students' progress is tracked effectively.

Requirements of the Secondary SEN Teaching Assistant (SEN TA):

  • Previous experience working as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, or in a similar SEN support role within a secondary school.
  • Understanding of SEN, including Autism, ADHD, SEMH, and Speech and Language Difficulties.
  • Ability to use differentiated approaches and communication strategies to engage students.
  • Strong behaviour management skills and the ability to support students with challenging behaviours.
  • A patient, empathetic, and positive approach, ensuring students feel encouraged and supported.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, including teachers, SENCOs, and therapists.
  • Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (preferred but not essential).
  • Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
