GSL Education are actively seeking a Secondary SEN Teaching Assistant (SEN TA) to join a supportive and inclusive school in Sheffield. As a Secondary SEN Teaching Assistant (SEN TA), you will provide tailored support to students with additional learning needs across Key Stages 3 and 4. You will work closely with teachers, SENCOs, and therapists to implement EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans) and personalised interventions, ensuring students receive the appropriate support to thrive academically and socially.

Responsibilities of the Secondary SEN Teaching Assistant (SEN TA):

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support to students with SEN needs, ensuring personalised learning strategies are effectively implemented.
  • Assist in delivering differentiated lesson plans tailored to individual needs, under the guidance of the class teacher.
  • Use assistive technologies, sensory resources, and structured interventions to enhance engagement and accessibility.
  • Support students with emotional regulation, behaviour management, and social development.
  • Implement communication strategies, including PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), Makaton, or alternative communication methods where required.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and external specialists to monitor progress and provide feedback.
  • Assist with exam preparation and coursework, ensuring students feel supported in their academic journey.
  • Encourage and promote positive behaviour and self-confidence, helping students develop essential life skills.
  • Offer pastoral support, ensuring students' well-being, safety, and emotional development are prioritised.
  • Support students with personal care tasks or mobility needs, if required, ensuring dignity and comfort.

Requirements of the Secondary SEN Teaching Assistant (SEN TA):

  • Previous experience supporting students with SEN in a secondary school setting.
  • Knowledge of SEN conditions, including Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, SEMH, and MLD.
  • Understanding of behaviour management strategies and experience using positive reinforcement techniques.
  • Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (desirable but not essential).
  • Ability to adapt learning materials and teaching strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
  • A calm, patient, and resilient nature, ensuring students receive consistent and empathetic support.
  • Confidence in working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
