The Burford Recruitment Company is delighted to be partnering with a beautiful private Cotswold estate located on the outskirts of Cirencester. Our client is seeking a practical, hands-on, and highly skilled gardener with extensive technical knowledge in horticulture.

As the Sole Gardener for this estate, you will take full responsibility for maintaining and enhancing the beautifully manicured 2-acre formal gardens, developing productive kitchen gardens, and managing the surrounding grounds, which span 150 acres.

You will report directly to the House Manager but are expected to work independently and take full responsibility for your tasks. While you will primarily work autonomously, you will also play a key role within the small estate management team, collaborating when required. Your day-to-day responsibilities include weeding, pruning, planting, watering, deadheading, and mowing, along with any additional tasks assigned by the Estate Manager. Occasionally, you may be asked to assist with weekend events, with advance notice provided.

Areas of Knowledge and Experience Required:

  • Ground Maintenance: Patio care, grit salting paths, mowing paddocks, and branch chipping.
  • Estate Maintenance: Ad Hoc duties around the estate such as changing light bulb, hanging pictures, etc.
  • Horticulture Expertise: Knowledge of herbaceous perennials, formal lawn care, ornamental tree pruning, and topiary.
  • Irrigation Systems: Experience with irrigation and watering pots.
  • Tools and Machinery: Proficient in using a range of hand and power tools, including chainsaws, strimmers, mowers, and pressure washers.
  • Fruit and Vegetable Cultivation: Experience in propagation and production is advantageous but not essential.

This role is ideal for an experienced gardener ready to take sole responsibility for maintaining and enhancing a high-level garden. It is equally well-suited to a head gardener seeking a hands-on role focused on grounds management without the oversight of a team.
