Interim Waste Treatment & Disposal Manager

Location: South West

Contract: Interim/ongoing

Day rate: £400-450 per day

Our client, a local authority in the South West, is seeking an experienced Waste Treatment & Disposal Manager to oversee and drive improvements in their waste management operations. This is a critical leadership role within the Environment Directorate, responsible for managing large-scale waste treatment and disposal contracts, ensuring regulatory compliance, and delivering service transformation projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the waste treatment and disposal functions, ensuring services operate efficiently, cost-effectively, and in line with environmental legislation.
  • Act as the lead council representative on significant waste management contracts, ensuring performance, compliance, and value for money.
  • Drive service transformation projects to align with new legislation, including the Environment Act 2021.
  • Explore and implement innovative waste treatment solutions to support the council's long-term environmental goals.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop and implement sustainable waste management strategies.
  • Monitor and analyse contract performance data, identifying opportunities for efficiency improvements and cost savings.

About You

  • Extensive experience in waste management, waste treatment, or disposal operations within a local authority or public sector setting.
  • Strong knowledge of waste legislation, regulations, and industry best practices, including the Environment Act 2021.
  • Experience in contract management, supplier negotiations, and performance monitoring.
  • Proven ability to lead service transformation projects and implement sustainable waste management solutions.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, budgets, and contract performance metrics.
  • A relevant degree or professional qualification in waste management or a related field.
