My Client is recruiting for a Principal Mechanical Engineer in the Water Sector

Locations - Hybrid working from ideally from Durham or surrounding areas, but may also consider other locations

Senior and Engineer levels also considered.

About the role:
A Principal Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the delivery of the mechanical design content of water industry projects, whilst leading a multi-disciplinary design team. Operating under hybrid working arrangements, much of your time will be spent working in your own space, though we do require that you are available to work in person with the other discipline team members in your assigned office as and when the situation dictates. Generally, this will be in the order of 2/3 days per week.
Projects will typically include water and wastewater; infrastructure and non-infrastructure works design. This will include design delivery at all stages, from feasibility and optioneering through to detailed designs for construction, determining the best solutions for pumping stations, treatment works, mechanical screening, chemical dosing systems, sludge handling systems etc. and the production of detailed mechanical design packages for construction.
Duties will typically include the delivery, management and co-ordination of design outputs produced by the local team and engineers from other water design offices and be responsible for the issue of those outputs either internally or to clients to agreed time, cost and quality metrics.

  • Develop effective concept design solutions that are consistent with the project brief.
  • Undertake a wide range of design work on all aspects of the functions design and maintenance.
  • Implement effective, value for money and innovative design solutions to meet technical and project requirements.
  • Maintain high technical standards, consistent with the project brief.
  • Process projects through preliminary and detailed design with particular emphasis on client requirements and innovation.
  • Liaise with clients and ensure their requirements are effectively communicated to the team.
  • Check and approve engineering designs, calculations, and oversee drawing production.
  • Check and approve contract documents and scheme cost estimates.
  • Check and approve technical documents and reports and assist in the preparation of expressions of

interest and tenders.

  • Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety, and environmental legislation, particularly the CDM regulations.
  • Management of a team of engineers including senior engineers, engineers, assistants, senior technicians, technicians, and graduate engineers.
  • Respond to queries from, and liaise with, site construction teams.
  • Maintain a strong focused client relationship.
  • Lead on contract preparation together with project planning and programming.
  • Manage projects, resources, and budgets.
  • Preparation of cost estimates and fees.
  • Effective management and response of project related correspondence.
  • Ensure compliance with the integrated management system and assist in its development.
  • lead in the preparation of bids.
  • Complete performance appraisals for any assigned staff and provide development opportunities for them.
  • Be aware of new technologies, industry and process innovation that can be used on projects.
  • Lead technical role for large and complex projects, possibly leading multiple design teams.
  • Able to take on significant elements of the design, working on their own initiative, with minimal supervision.
  • Project management of a number of complex projects to time, cost, quality working within a multi-disciplinary design team environment to obtain, analyse information, and report on findings.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Degree, HNC/HND or similar in Mechanical Engineering or related
  • Ability to produce, check and approve detailed mechanical design outputs for complex plant.
  • Water Sector experience
  • An excellent working knowledge of sewage and clean water processes
  • The ability to develop good practical engineering solutions.
  • The ability to think outside of what has been considered to give Company the edge in providing solutions.
  • Good knowledge of civil and electrical works would be beneficial.
  • Be able to produce bottom-up cost estimates.
  • To be able to lead numerous projects simultaneously.
  • A team player and communicator who can manage a design from start to finish including site support to our project managers and construction team whilst working on his or her own initiative.
  • Willing to travel with occasional overnight stays.
  • Must have a driving license.
