Service care solutions are seeking a dedicated and skilled Solicitor to join the local Government, Fair Work and Consumer Advocacy Branch of the Scottish Government. This role is crucial for providing high-quality legal services to our policy colleagues in the specified areas. The position is maternity cover, and the successful candidate will play a key role in various legislative and advisory capacities.Location: Victoria Quay, Edinburgh 1 day a week (with the possibility to work from Atlantic Quay, Glasgow or from home the other days) The current team working schedule typically involves in-person attendance at Victoria Quay on Tuesdays and Atlantic Quay on Thursdays. Other days may be flexible, with options for hybrid work-from-home arrangements. The role is until March 2026- (11months) Day rate is negotiable starting from a minimum of £302 per day.. Key Responsibilities:
  • Drafting of secondary legislation concerning council tax and non-domestic rates, involving significant financial implications.
  • Serve as the lead solicitor for the Community Wealth Building (Scotland) Bill, supporting Ministers during its Parliamentary journey following its introduction in March 2025.
  • Act as the lead solicitor for the reconsideration of the European Charter of Local Self-Government (Incorporation) (Scotland) Bill, a member’s bill endorsed by the Scottish Government.
  • Advise Fair Work policy officials on the Scottish elements of the UK Employment Rights Bill.
  • Provide ad-hoc legal advice to policy officials in the Local Government, Fair Work and Consumer Advocacy teams on various issues, including legislative competence, statutory interpretation, grant letters, impact assessments, and public law matters.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Strong legal skills applicable or transferable to public law in Scotland.
  • Proven ability to conduct thorough legal analysis, considering multiple sources of information and data.
  • Excellent communication skills to convey complex legal issues effectively, ensuring clarity and relevance within the wider strategic context.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Organizational skills that allow for flexible management of workloads, risk assessment, and prioritization amidst competing demands, fostering an openness to innovation and efficiency.
