Overview

The Head of Utilities is responsible for leading the operational performance, strategic growth, and development of the utilities business in the North of the UK. (Scotland). This senior leadership role combines oversight of sales, technical delivery, and business development to position the organisation as a market leader, achieving its financial, operational, and strategic objectives. The Head of Utilities will play a critical role in driving strategic initiatives, including mergers and acquisitions and enhancing the brand’s market presence.

Specific utilities knowledge of one or more of the following;

  • Water
  • Gas
  • Renewable

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of the business plan, aligning operational goals with the company’s strategic vision.
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives to secure sustainable growth and competitive advantage.
  • Develop and lead the sales function to build a robust pipeline of opportunities.
  • Drive the growth of regulatory revenues and expand the portfolio of sustainable projects.
  • Establish strong client relationships and partnerships to foster long-term business growth.
  • Oversee operational delivery, ensuring adherence to safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
  • Monitor commercial performance, cost control and risk management, to meet P&L targets.
  • Collaborate with Operations and General Managers across the division.
  • Monitor, analyse, and report on performance KPIs to track progress.
  • Ensure continuous improvement in operational and commercial activities.
  • Work closely with central support teams to optimise resource deployment.
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration across teams.

Experience

  • Degree in a relevant field or equivalent industry experience.
  • Membership in a recognised utilities-related professional institution (preferred).
  • Proven leadership experience within the utilities sector, with a strong background in operational and commercial performance.
  • Demonstrated success in driving business growth through sales pipeline development and regulatory revenue generation.
  • In-depth understanding of utilities operating models, service delivery capabilities, and industry best practices.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of regulator frameworks, industry trends, and the application of Civil Engineering in infrastructure sectors.
  • Strong track record of ensuring safety and quality in business operations.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to balance operational delivery and long-term growth.
  • Collaborative leader, skilled in cross-functional teamwork and stakeholder engagement.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making abilities, with a focus on achieving measurable results.
  • Commercially astute, with expertise in cost control and risk management.
