We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Gardener to oversee the gardens and grounds of a large country estate in Devon. This position requires a dedicated and knowledgeable individual to maintain and enhance the estate’s extensive gardens to the highest standards.
The Gardener will be responsible for all aspects of horticultural care. They will ensure that lawns, flower beds, shrubs, and trees are meticulously maintained, implementing seasonal planting, pruning, and pest control measures as needed. The role also involves overseeing the estate’s greenhouse, composting processes, and ensuring soil health.
This role requires horticultural expertise, and a proactive approach to garden planning and development. The Gardener will assist in the design and enhancement of the estate’s landscape, keeping detailed records of garden activities and managing the garden budget. They will also be expected to maintain tools, equipment, and garden structures while ensuring the estate remains presentable and welcoming at all times.
This is a Monday to Friday role with a 45-hour work week, offering the option to live in during the week in an ensuite bedroom with a kitchenette, and vacate on weekends. Alternatively, candidates who live nearby may choose to live out.
DUTIES TO INCLUDE:
- Maintain and enhance the estate’s gardens, lawns and herbaceous borders
- Oversee fruit and vegetable production, including planting, harvesting, and liaising with household staff
- Manage and supervise garden staff and external contractors to ensure high standards are met
- Maintain garden tools, equipment, and machinery, ensuring safe and efficient operation
- Assist with horticultural planning and development
- Ensure the estate’s outdoor spaces are always well-presented, tidy, and guest-ready
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
- Extensive experience in high-level gardening, preferably within private estates
- Excellent horticultural knowledge, including plant care, fruit and vegetable production, and formal garden maintenance
- Proactive approach to garden planning and landscape enhancement
- Ability to work collaboratively within a private household setting
- Strong organisational skills with experience in budget management
- Full, clean UK driving licence
