Our client is a leader in illustrated non-fiction publishing with a focus on art, craft and wellbeing categories. They create books and products that ignite and nurture their readers' hobbies and interests. From their base in Exeter, Devon, they publish around 60 new titles each year, which are distributed globally.

The Role

They’re looking for a Designer to join their in-house design team on a fixed term contract, initially for nine months. The successful candidate will be primarily focused on the design of their books, including interior layouts, covers and jackets. They will oversee all areas of the process, from design concepts through to handing over production ready artwork. They will also provide creative support to the sales and marketing teams. The successful applicant will be happy to take a hands-on role in the photography studio, styling and art directing photo shoots to produce showstopping images for their page layouts.

They are a small team and outsource a proportion of design work, so part of this role is the commissioning of freelance designers, art directors and illustrators. This involves coordinating schedules, budgets and creative briefs. Excellent communication skills are a must.

Skills and Qualifications

  • A joy in creativity and love for design, who can bring fresh ideas and creative vision to the role
  • A sound knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
  • A knack for typography and complex text layout
  • The ability to be team player who can collaborate but also take responsibility for their own workload and work to tight deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills who can liaise with appropriate departments and external freelancers to ensure all expectations are met
  • Good knowledge of production and print processes
  • A holistic approach to design, taking into account print finish options on the overall design outcome of the book, to ensure excellent quality standards
  • Experience in art direction or an interest in developing this skill
  • Previous experience in a design role (2 years minimum)
