Are you passionate about transforming lives and making a real impact on young people with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. We have an exciting opportunity for a Learning Support Assistant to join a dedicated team at a SEMH school in Exeter.

About the role:

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will play a key role in creating a safe, structured and supportive learning environment for students aged 7 - 16 (KS2 - KS4). Working closely with teachers and fellow support staff, you’ll provide targeted behavioural interventions, helping students to develop coping strategies, self-regulation skills and positive habits that will set them up for success. You will play a vital role in supporting them throughout their education.

Key responsibilities:

  • Support students in managing challenging behaviours and developing self-regulation strategies

  • Build trusting relationships with students to foster emotional resilience

  • Collaborate with teaching staff to implement individualised behaviour plans

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support to address specific needs

  • Maintain a consistent and caring approach to managing behaviour while reinforcing boundaries

Who we’re looking for:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A relational approach to working with young people

  • Excellent behaviour management skills and the ability to de-escalate situations effectively

  • Resilience and adaptability to navigate a dynamic, fast-paced environment

  • A sense of humour to engage positively with students

  • The ability to establish and maintain clear, consistent boundaries

  • A proactive, solution-focused mindset

  • Previous experience working with children or individuals with additional needs is essential

The school is diligent in supporting the wellbeing of their staff. Full training and support is provided, you have daily safeguarding meetings before and after school and counselling is provided to all staff. You will be part of a friendly, close-knit and supportive team.

Previous experience in education is desirable but not essential. A background in a care setting provides excellent foundations to be successful in this role. You will be working Monday to Friday, term time only. It is essential that you have an excellent work ethic as you will be constantly supervising the young people, even having lunch with them.
