Role Overview:
As a Student Welfare Officer, you will play a key role in supporting the emotional and mental health of students, ensuring they feel safe, supported, and equipped to succeed in their academic and personal lives. You will work closely with students, staff, and external agencies to provide advice, guidance, and interventions tailored to individual needs.

About the school:

The School is a mixed Secondary School for students aged from 11 to 16 years with around 780 students in total. The School is based close to Fareham and the school was graded as a Good School in its last Ofsted inspection and continues to perform well. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one support to students on personal, social, and emotional issues.
  • Identify students who may need additional welfare support and offer proactive interventions.
  • Liaise with parents, teachers, and external services to ensure a holistic approach to student welfare.
  • Offer advice on mental health, stress management, and academic pressures.
  • Support students in times of crisis and provide referrals to appropriate support services.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of student welfare workshops and programs.
  • Ensure student records are kept up to date in accordance with confidentiality and safeguarding protocols.
  • Advocate for students’ rights and well-being within the school community.
  • Work closely with the safeguarding team to maintain a safe and supportive environment.

Requirements:

  • A degree or relevant qualification in psychology, social work, education, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of student welfare issues, mental health, and safeguarding policies.
  • Experience working with young people, ideally in an educational setting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Empathetic, approachable, and able to build trust with students.
  • Knowledge of local support services and mental health resources.
  • A proactive attitude and the ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in a student welfare or pastoral role.
  • Training in mental health first aid or similar qualifications.
  • A passion for supporting young people and promoting their overall well-being.
