HiL Software Engineer

Location: Gaydon – Hybrid
Contract Type: Ongoing, Inside IR35
Rate: £33.25 per hour (Umbrella)

Role Overview:

We are seeking a skilled and proactive HiL Software Engineer to be responsible for the development and implementation of mechatronic hardware-in-the-loop (mHiL) test solutions across all Engineering Operations Labs test areas. In this role, the HiL Software Engineer will support the development and delivery of key new facilities, technology, infrastructure, and strategy for test operations, leading projects from concept through to delivery.

The HiL Software Engineer will play a crucial role in ensuring the successful testing of automotive systems, including active chassis systems, HVAC, and battery management systems. The role requires hands-on experience with dSPACE HiL software and hardware, as well as strong skills in automotive simulation packages.

This position offers a Hybrid working model, primarily based in Gaydon, with flexibility for remote working, ensuring a balanced work environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement mHiL test solutions across all Engineering Operations Labs test areas.
  • Lead projects from concept through to delivery, ensuring successful testing of automotive systems.
  • Support the development and delivery of new facilities, technology, infrastructure, and strategy for test operations.
  • Commission hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) solutions using dSPACE SCALEXIO and MicroAutobox hardware.
  • Integrate simulation models (IPG or ASM) and perform restbus (CAN, FlexRay, or LIN) simulation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support the testing of active chassis systems, HVAC, and battery management systems.

Skills Required:

  • Advanced user of dSPACE HiL software (ControlDesk, ConfigurationDesk, AutomationDesk) and hardware (MicroAutobox and SCALEXIO).
  • Competent in automotive simulation packages such as Mathworks Simulink, IPG Carmaker, or dSPACE ASM.
  • Proven hands-on experience in commissioning HiL solutions.
  • Working knowledge of Restbus simulation (CAN, FlexRay, or LIN) and simulation model integration.

Experience Required:

  • Experienced in using dSPACE HiL software packages (ControlDesk, ConfigurationDesk, ModelDesk, and AutomationDesk).
  • Experience with automotive simulation packages: IPG Carmaker, dSPACE ASM, SimPack.
  • Background in Electrical, Electronics, or Controls Engineering.
  • Knowledge of testing methodologies for automotive systems (chassis, powertrain, body) and road vehicles.
  • Experienced with Vector Tools – CANalyzer & CANoe (CANape is also beneficial).
  • Knowledge of communication protocols – Flexray, CAN/CAN FD, LIN, Automotive Ethernet, EtherCAT.
  • Proficient in scripting languages – Python, MAT-Script, CAPL.
  • Applied understanding of vehicle electrical systems and wiring.

Experience Preferred:

  • Prior experience in an automotive simulation or software development role.
  • Experience working with test rigs and driving simulators (AVL, MTS, ABD, etc.).
  • Educated to degree level in a related discipline.
