About the Role: As a Fermentation Scientist, you will play a crucial role in designing and implementing microbial strains for the production of biologically active peptides. You will generate novel ideas around biological production methods and contribute to various research objectives. Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement microbial strains for the production of biologically active peptides.
  • Generate innovative ideas around biological production methods, including upstream and downstream processing strategies.
  • Contribute to research objectives in line with project/company key performance indicators.
  • Design, set up, and perform experiments, analyse and interpret results, and develop experimental strategies.
  • Provide regular updates to project members, Molecular Lead, and Management.
  • Work closely with the Technical Manager to support laboratory operations.
  • Mentor and train less experienced team members, ensuring their effective development.
  • Document research output, maintain records and databases, and draft technical/progress reports.
  • Handle data proficiently and use word processing programmes.
  • Present work at internal meetings and contribute to reports for stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings, seminars, and workshops.
  • Engage in personal and professional development to enhance skills.

Qualifications and Skills:

Essential:

  • PhD in relevant Life Sciences (e.g., Molecular Biology, Synthetic Biology/Biotechnology).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of molecular biology techniques and heterologous production/fermentation.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of biologically-active peptides and the wider subject area.
  • Excellent understanding of molecular biology and production of biologically active molecules.
  • Practical experience with HPLC and LC-MS analysis.
  • Strong collaboration and organisation skills within a team project setting.
  • Ability to adapt and prioritise in a start-up environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Desirable:

  • 2+ years of industrial experience in molecular biology, microbial cell culture, especially bioreactor-based fermentation.
  • Knowledge of downstream processing (IEX, SEC, column packing, resins, etc.) for product purification.
  • Experience with downstream processing of proteins/polypeptides.
  • Experience with microbial bioreactors/fermentation.
