London Gatwick offers an exciting opportunity for a Lead Estimating Manager to join our dynamic team at the world's most efficient single runway airport. The Lead Estimating Manager will play a key role in supporting the Lead Commercial Manager in delivering the strategic aims and objectives of the business through driving an integrated and consistent approach to estimating/cost planning and benchmarking ensuring that best practices are employed throughout all Programmes.

By providing accurate early-stage financial estimates and cost plans, they help support cost control to prevent budget overruns and ensure the successful completion of projects within the allocated budget.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Lead & manage the estimating function across all programmes of work
  • Lead the development and maintenance of accurate project cost estimates and cost plans throughout the project lifecycle to support the governance processes
  • Where required, be responsible for undertaking cost estimates, applying Gatwick Airport standard processes and procedures.
  • Support the Lead Commercial Manager in producing and periodically updating processes and procedures for estimating, benchmarking, and targeting costs, with a focus on current best practice
  • Ensuring the accuracy of estimates and cost plans for Tollgates using appropriate assurance techniques
  • Support project teams in practically applying processes and procedures for estimation and benchmarking
  • Lead & manage the utilisation of techniques to ensure that estimates and cost plans reflect value to the business, compared to the external market, through validation, cost modelling, and benchmarking
  • Lead & manage the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of a benchmarking database at an appropriate level, utilising a web-based portal (currently ABCToolkit.com) to enable approved external companies to contribute data
  • Lead the cultivation of relationships with other Airports and Client organisations, fostering a community that shares data to establish a range of external benchmarks supporting value and capital efficiency demonstrations
  • Support the Programme Commercial Managers in the coaching and training of teams in application of best practice estimating, cost planning & benchmarking techniques

Qualifications and experience

  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent in a relevant engineering, construction or business-related field
  • Membership in a professionally recognised cost organisation such as RICS highly desirable
  • Experience as a Senior Cost Planner / Managing Estimator (or similar) on multi-year programs/projects with a cost typically exceeding £50m in a relevant industry
  • Understanding of designing business processes for cost estimating (including the implementation of standardised Cost Breakdown Structures), preferably within an organisation considered to be high-performing or best practice in project delivery
  • Involvement in the delivery of infrastructure projects in a live operational environment is highly desirable
  • Experience in estimating costs of capital projects in an airport environment desirable
