Your new roleRefocus Assistant (Pastoral Care)January 2025 to July 2025 fixed term contract Term Time Only 37 Hours per week Band F.7 £25,584 per annum pro rata Actual salary: £21,392 per annumThe RoleWe have created a new Refocus Assistant role for a fixed contract to further support the pastoral care of our students. The successful candidate will work under the direction of our pastoral team, Senior Leaders, and Heads of Year to provide pastoral care, support, and guidance to our students.The successful candidate will ideally have relevant pastoral experience of working in a school or youth work within the community. Experience of dealing with outside agencies, the police, and early intervention services would be advantageous to provide an effective support service from the outset.The pastoral role will support the promotion of high levels of behaviour, attendance, and punctuality of students in line with key areas of safeguarding and well-being. The candidate will provide support and liaise with key staff across the school as they manage our students' behaviour, personal, and educational issues.The Pastoral Support Assistant will work within the pastoral team. Our ongoing aim and commitment is to support students to achieve their full potential.DutiesKey areas of the role will include:

  • Overseeing and staffing the school 'Refocus' room.
  • Working with the Heads of Year, Pastoral Manager, and Deputy Head to provide support on pastoral and behaviour issues as directed.
  • Providing administration to the pastoral team, writing reports, and submitting referrals to the appropriate levels of staff.
  • Collecting and supervising students for detentions and other sanctions.
  • Supporting with the on-call system.
  • Assisting with independent investigation reports on incidents.
  • Monitoring, maintaining, and retaining accurate records in line with data protection and GDPR.
  • Supporting pastoral staff in the implementation of effective safeguarding procedures.
  • Liaising and preparing reports for the Deputy Head and pastoral team as required.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective and supportive relations with pupils and parents/carers.

Key Requirements

  • Ideally, experience of working with outside agencies and early intervention teams. This experience may be through working in a school or as a youth worker within the community.
  • Good interpersonal skills are required, including flexibility, organisation, and time management.
  • Confidence to challenge difficult behaviour in a professional manner.
  • Ability to display an understanding of social issues affecting children and demonstrate a flexible approach to support families.
  • Awareness of legislation relating to school attendance and safeguarding of children.
  • Willingness to undertake further training to support the safeguarding team.
