Hours: Part-time, Monday to Friday, 12pm until 1.30pm

Location: Lancaster

Job Purpose:

A School Lunchtime Welfare Assistant, also known as a Midday Supervisor or Lunch Assistant, plays an important role in ensuring the safety, well-being, and enjoyment of pupils during lunchtime.

To supervise pupils during lunchtime, ensuring their safety, welfare, and good behaviour in the dining area, playground, and other designated areas of the school. The welfare assistant supports the children in eating and playing while fostering a positive and inclusive environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Supervision and Safety

  • Supervise pupils during lunch in dining halls, playgrounds, and indoor areas.
  • Ensure the safety and security of pupils, addressing any immediate needs or concerns.
  • Monitor behaviours, intervening to maintain discipline and deal with minor incidents.
  • Report any accidents, injuries, or serious behavioural issues to the senior staff.

Promoting Positive Behaviour

Encourage polite and respectful behaviour during lunchtime.

Help students develop good table manners, social skills, and respectful play habits.

Implement the school's behaviour policies and guidelines, encouraging positive interactions.

Support in the Dining Area:

  • Assist younger or less independent students with opening containers, cutting food, or carrying trays.
  • Ensure students eat their meals in a safe and orderly manner.
  • Promote healthy eating and hygiene practices, ensuring children wash their hands before eating and clear their space afterward.

Playground Supervision:

  • Oversee students during play, organizing or engaging them in games and activities if necessary.
  • Promote inclusion and ensure no child is isolated or excluded from activities.
  • Address any conflicts or disagreements between children, helping to resolve issues fairly.

First Aid:

  • Provide basic first aid for minor injuries, such as cuts and grazes, following school procedures.
  • Ensure incidents are recorded and reported to the relevant school staff.

Health and Safety:

  • Maintain a safe environment by monitoring equipment, reporting hazards, and ensuring students play safely.
  • Implement health and safety guidelines, including evacuation procedures in the event of an emergency.

Teamwork and Communication:

  • Work as part of the school's lunchtime team, collaborating with other welfare assistants, teachers, and administrative staff.
  • Attend relevant training sessions or staff meetings as required.

General Support:

  • Assist with the setup and clearing of the dining area as needed.
  • Perform other reasonable duties as directed by the senior supervisor or headteacher.

Qualifications and Skills:

Essential:

  • A caring and approachable nature, with the ability to engage positively with children.
  • Basic first aid knowledge (training may be provided by the school).
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • A sense of responsibility and patience in supervising children.
  • Ability to manage behaviour in a calm and effective manner.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily outdoor and indoor environments (playground and dining areas).
  • Active supervision role, which may involve standing and walking for extended periods.
