OPAL (Older Peoples Action in the Locality) is a charity committed to enhancing the quality of life for older people in NW Leeds (LS16 postcode area). We offer a range of services to promote independence, social engagement, and wellbeing. Our Community Transport service is a vital part of this, providing affordable, accessible transport to help older adults access essential services, social activities, and medical appointments, thereby reducing isolation and fostering community connections. This post is grant funded until December 2026.
Job Overview:
Please note: This is a job share role, requiring flexibility and coordination between two team members to share the responsibilities.
We are seeking a compassionate and reliable Transport Coordinator to join our team. In this role, you will use your excellent organisational skills to manage and operate our Community Transport service, ensuring it runs smoothly, safely, and efficiently. Your efforts will directly help reduce social isolation and promote independence among older people in our community.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Management: Lead the management of the Community Transport partnership between OPAL and AVSED, ensuring it is safe, efficient, and responsive to the needs of older people.
Vehicle Management: Drive and coordinate the use of OPALs minibus and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), including route planning, maintenance, and safety checks.
Volunteer Coordination: Recruit, train, and support transport volunteers, ensuring a positive experience for all involved.
Health & Safety: Serve as the Health and Safety Officer for the transport service, conducting risk assessments and ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
General Duties: Work collaboratively with OPAL staff and volunteers, maintain accurate records, and assist with general administrative duties.
Essential Requirements:
- Valid UK driving license with D1 category.
- Strong communication skills and a caring, patient approach when working with older adults and those with disabilities.
- A flexible attitude to working hours and changing schedules.
Desirable Qualifications (Training can be provided):
- First Aid Certification
- MIDAS Certification (Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme)
