General Foreman - Yorkshire
The General Foreman will oversee the management and supervision of all construction activities on site, including subcontractors, to ensure the successful delivery of highways and bridge schemes. The role requires maintaining high standards of health and safety, ensuring works are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standard-delivering a defect-free end product.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee major road and bridge works, including new construction, maintenance, and structural repairs.
- Ensure compliance with National Highways and Local Authority specifications, DMRB standards, and contract requirements.
- Ensure appropriate inspection and testing regimes for asphalt, concrete, and structural steelwork are followed.
- Conduct site inductions and toolbox talks (TBTs) independently and confidently.
- Lead by example in promoting and enforcing site safety standards and ensuring compliance with HSE legislation and company policies.
- Ensure all works are carried out in accordance with approved method statements and risk assessments (RAMs), including delivering RAMs briefings.Can fulfil the role of Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS).
- Strong knowledge of highways construction, drainage, deep excavation, bridge structures, and temporary works.
- Identify and implement best practices, process efficiencies, and innovations to improve project delivery.
- Provide technical support and troubleshoot day-to-day construction challenges.Supports efficiency and innovation planning, contributing to collaborative planning strategies.
- Support the Project Planner in maintaining and updating the project programme, including as-built records.
- Conduct yourself professionally, maintaining strong relationships with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders.
- Open, honest, and approachable with a collaborative team mentality.
- Display a proactive and solutions-oriented attitude (_can-do/will-do_ mindset).Identifies risks and opportunities, reporting them in monthly management updates.
- Manage and track the hire and off-hire of internal and external equipment.
- Ensure works are delivered on time, within budget, and to specification, proactively driving progress.
- Maintain accurate measurement records for direct and subcontract works to support Quantity Surveyors.
- Maintain strong relationships with internal teams, clients, subcontractors, and third-party stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with sector-specific quality assurance requirements for highways and bridge projects.
- Oversee material deliveries and conduct quality checks as required.
Experience and Qualifications
- Extensive experience in delivering large civil engineering schemes, including highways, drainage, and structures.
- Strong IT skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant software.
- CSCS Gold Card (minimum).
- SSSTS / SMSTS qualification.
- First Aid at Work certificate (preferred).
- Holds a UK driving licence (clean or low points).
