Senior Payroll Team leader

Location: Leicester Office - Hybrid - usually 2 days at home after induction period.

Department: Central Services

Reporting to: Payroll Operations Team Leader

Working hours - 9am - 5pm Monday - Friday - 37.5

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Payroll Team leader to join our Team managing a team of 6 Administrators. You will play a crucial role in processing large-scale monthly and weekly payrolls, with specific responsibility for Central Payroll. This role requires accuracy, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving skills to ensure colleagues are paid correctly and on time.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Payroll Team Leader, you will:

  • Accurately enter and update employee data in the Payroll System, ensuring all necessary amendments are made before payroll cut-off.
  • Ensure financial controls and compliance to minimize financial risk.
  • Handle and resolve payroll-related queries, escalating complex issues as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation to support financial audits.
  • Work under strict payroll deadlines, prioritizing tasks effectively.
  • Communicate professionally with managers, third parties, and colleagues, including handling challenging situations with diplomacy.
  • Support ad hoc tasks, including system testing, process development, audits, RTI submissions, PAYE, and project work.
  • Process BACS payments and payrolls via PTX/Finance.
  • Approve manual payments and ensure timely and accurate filing of payroll documentation.
  • Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all payroll processes.
  • Assist with quality checking payroll processes and covering for senior tasks in other divisions when needed.
  • Manage end-to-end payroll processing, from administration and SOX compliance to BACS submission.
  • Act professionally and confidently when dealing with senior management.

Key Skills & Qualifications

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) required; A-levels or further education desirable.
  • Strong numeracy and IT literacy, including Excel (V-lookups, pivot tables).
  • Hands-on experience with payroll applications (iTrent experience desirable).
  • In-depth knowledge of payroll legislation and best practices.
  • Excellent attention to detail, methodical approach, and ability to manage large volumes of data.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) to liaise effectively with colleagues, benefit providers, and third parties.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and manage multiple priorities.
  • High level of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Adaptability and willingness to support the wider team when required.

Experience

  • Previous experience in a Senior Payroll Administration role.
  • Experience handling high-volume payroll processing is desirable.
  • Prior sector-specific experience is an advantage.
