The main purpose of the role is to provide comprehensive support for VAT and tax services, including managing VAT accounting systems, preparing and submitting VAT, CIS, and corporation tax returns, and offering day-to-day guidance on VAT, CIS, and tax-related matters.
Key Responsibilities:
The Role:
- Prepare and submit VAT, CIS, and corporation tax returns as needed.
- Offer specialized advice on VAT, CIS, and tax matters, working with appointed advisors and auditors.
- Manage and track VAT shelter arrangements, ensuring proper recovery and accurate documentation.
- Maintain and review the coding structure within the financial management system for correct VAT accounting.
- Ensure the partial exemption special method is fit for purpose and maximize VAT recovery under this method.
- Collaborate with the finance team to review transactions from VAT and CIS perspectives and ensure compliance.
- Work closely with internal and external advisors, as well as auditors, on VAT and tax-related issues.
- Support development and construction teams with tax-efficient planning for development projects.
- Administer registrations for VAT, CIS, and corporation tax, while monitoring charitable tax status.
- Manage corporate tax charges, including handling payments on account.
- Supervise and guide the VAT Assistant role.
- Provide training to employees on VAT, CIS, and tax matters as required.
- Assist in managing relationships with tax authorities, including HMRC, across VAT, CIS, and direct taxes.
- Evaluate and implement process changes to enhance the efficiency of VAT and tax functions.
- Participate in projects related to VAT and tax matters, including system upgrades, process reviews, and business analysis.
The Person:
- Significant experience in financial management, accounting, and data analysis within a large, complex organisation.
- Knowledge and experience in preparing and submitting VAT, CIS, and Tax returns.
- Familiarity with Special and Standard Partial Exemption Methods for financial reporting.
- Competence in handling and analysing large datasets in Excel.
- Ability to provide expert advice on VAT and CIS matters, including Reverse Charge VAT in Construction.
- Proficiency in extracting, interrogating, and interpreting financial data to produce accurate and meaningful reports.
- Strong communication, listening, and questioning skills, coupled with analytical and organisational capabilities.
- A proactive approach to resolving issues and implementing financial solutions.
- Ability to evaluate financial and non-financial data and summarise critical insights effectively.
- Skilled at managing work under pressure and meeting challenging deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive working relationships.
- Advanced-level expertise in Microsoft Excel.
- Effective communication skills to engage across various platforms and formats, including virtual and in-person interactions.
- Competence in using Microsoft Office applications e.g. Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
