Description

The role is responsible for the security, safety and general appearance of the College buildings and grounds, together with minor works maintenance and repairs, ensuring the delivery of a high-quality customer focused service as standard. Working as part of a team across all college sites, the facilities technician will ensure all staff, students and visitors along with College buildings, valuables, resources and assets are safe and secure. They will encourage and engage in an ethos of shared responsibility and respect, to enable the safeguarding and wellbeing of any user of the College. Where safe to do so the facilities technician will proactively intervene to mitigate and eliminate situations where safety and security may be compromised. 

This is a flexible role providing support cross college across all premises occupied by the course or its subsidiaries.  There is no fixed workplace attached to this role which also includes responsibility for the security of College premises and contents during and outside normal College opening times. The role-holder will be observant making regular visits to all parts of the premises for security purposes and challenge assertively, but not aggressively any apparent unauthorised persons or intruders on College premises.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Be an approved key holder with responsibility for opening and closing premises at times required
  2. Ensure the practice and promotion of safe and healthy behaviour in the College
  3. To act as first point of contact for any security incidents on College premises
  4. Provide written / electronic reports relating to incidents where there have been breaches in security or Health and Safety
  5. Undertake Security patrols and other routines within any of the College premises as required
  6. To support and assist in staff and student identification checks
  7.  Undertake general porter duties including but not limited to moving furniture and equipment of a non-technical nature to and from rooms and other premises used by the college
  8.  Assisting in operating a system for the delivery of College goods by checking and signing for goods received and moving them as necessary to the appropriate location or storage area.
  9. Deployment of bollards, barriers or tape to keep internal or external prescribed areas free from vehicles for deliveries or other specific purposes requested by the Centre or Facilities Coordinator.
  10. Change locks and arranged for keys to be cut as and when required.
  11. Take all reasonable steps to eliminate waste by turning off lights, appliances or isolating electrical, gas or water systems when not in use
  12. Monitor the state of repair of all furniture, fixtures and fittings on site and report any faults
  13. Undertake minor maintenance and first fix as required, examples include but are not limited to:
    • Painting and decorating
    • Change light fittings, shades, diffusers, fuses, plugs, and taps washers.
    • Undertaking basic repairs to such furniture, fixtures, fittings, and the fabric of the building.
  14. Drilling holes in walls and hanging fixtures and fittings as required.
  15. Monitoring the activities of external contractors on site and alerting the Centre Manager and Estates Management should any cause of concern arise.
  16. Manage any external areas and when required and in adverse weather conditions sprinkle rock salt on paths, steps, paved areas, and driveways as appropriate. 
  17. To assist in keeping external areas and roadways clear of obstruction for potential access of emergency service vehicles. 
  18. To act as a Fire Marshall and / or First Aider, as required, in the event of an incident.
  19. To actively support and implement the ‘One College, One Mindset’ initiative.
  20. To support any key cross college activities such as enrolment, open evenings and recruitment events
  21. To follow departmental/ organisational policies and procedures and operate within service standards at all times
  22. Carry out other relevant and appropriate duties within the framework of this grade that may from time to time be required at a location determined by the needs of the service.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
  • Experience of working in a security, maintenance and/or caretaking role
  • Completed formal security training or willingness to complete
  • Understanding of safe working practices in line with Health and Safety Legislation
  • Experience of alarm systems, CCTV and radios
  • Ability to undertake minor repairs and first fix maintenance
  • A basic understanding of heating and ventilation systems and controls
  • Experience of working in a customer-oriented environment
  •  Experience and knowledge of customer care procedures
  • Good communication skills, verbal and written
  •  Minimum of Level 2 literacy and numeracy or willingness to complete
  • Flexibility to work across all college premises and work a shift pattern as directed
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and on own initiative.
  • Good inter-personal skills with the ability to answer enquiries and deal with all customers in a friendly and efficient manner 
  • Ability to show an understanding of, and commitment to College policies and procedures, particularly equality and diversity.
