The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and skilled Assistant Director of Finance to provide high-quality financial administration and stewardship within a large and complex organisation. Reporting to the Executive Director of Investment and Innovation, the successful candidate will join the Finance Leadership Team and play a pivotal role in supporting the delivery of the Council's vision and values through robust financial management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Working closely with the Section 151 officer, Corporate Management Team (CMT), elected members, and senior officers to shape and deliver the Council's strategic vision through effective financial leadership.
  • Leading a team of approximately 40 staff, fostering a culture of professionalism and high performance.
  • Managing contracts with key external partners, including external audit providers and financial systems suppliers.
  • Directly managing a service budget of approximately £5m and supporting oversight of the Council's gross expenditure of £982m.
  • Ensuring compliance with all statutory financial regulations and maintaining best practices in public sector finance.
  • Providing expert financial analysis and advice to inform and support decision-making processes.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished financial leader with:

  • A strong track record of delivering high-quality financial management in a complex organisation.
  • Proven leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and develop teams to achieve their full potential.
  • Significant experience in managing large budgets and financial systems.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage, influence, and build trust at all levels.
  • A professional accountancy qualification (e.g., CIPFA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent) is essential.
  • Full member of CCAB body (preferably CIPFA) with significant post qualification experience.
