Fire Suppression Design Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Fire Suppression Design Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team. This role requires expertise in fire safety, design, and project management to deliver complex infrastructure projects. Opportunities for leadership, communication, and coordination to ensure project success are also part of the role.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Design and Delivery: Lead the design and implementation of fire systems (fire mains, sprinkler systems, gas suppression, or water mist systems) in compliance with industry standards and client specifications.
  2. Ensure designs meet safety, technical compliance, and integration with other systems.
  3. Guarantee the constructability and maintainability of designs.
  4. Project Support: Work closely with internal and external stakeholders (engineering managers, contractors, clients) to meet cost, time, and quality requirements.
  5. Contribute to procurement, value engineering, and standardization of designs.
  6. Technical Leadership: Lead technical responses and oversee fire suppression system development to meet both client and accreditation standards.
  7. Support health and safety practices to ensure compliance with fire system regulations and standards.
  8. Management and Coordination: Manage communication with stakeholders, including accreditation bodies.
  9. Oversee project teams and assist with client strategy development.
  10. Provide support during procurement and manage project P&L activities.
  11. Line Management: Support employee skills development and ensure mandatory training is completed.
  12. Oversee health and safety compliance for direct reports and ensure adherence to relevant regulations.

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

Essential:

Working knowledge of relevant standards (BS9990, BS:EN:12845) and fire safety systems (sprinklers, gas suppression, etc.).

Proven experience in fire system design and strong project management skills.

Proficiency in CAD/BIM software.

Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

Desired:

Experience with rail industry standards and processes.

Knowledge of fire alarm systems and their integration with other systems.

Familiarity with the full project lifecycle, from tendering to certification.

Qualifications:

Essential:

Degree/HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or related fields.

Professional membership with engineering bodies such as the Institution of Fire Engineers.

Competency in sprinkler design (LPCB Basic, Intermediate, or Fully Hydraulically Calculated).

Desired:

Additional certifications in sprinkler testing and commissioning.

Project management qualifications (e.g., PFQ/PMQ, CSCS card).

Safety qualifications like IOSH Managing Safely.

Competencies/Behaviors:

Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple stakeholders.

Strong capability to apply safety and assurance principles in design.

Awareness of hazard identification and risk management during design.

Awareness of social responsibility, industry best practices, and sustainability.

Experience:

Essential:

Previous experience designing fire suppression systems in the Rail sector.

Knowledge of design and programme management processes.

Desired:

Experience specifically in Rail Projects, with preference for candidates with Network Rail CRE experience.

Additional Benefits:

Contracted Location: London Offices (3 days on-site).

Annual Leave: 25 days excluding bank holidays.

Home to Work Travel: Travel to the contracted work location is provided.

Travel Expenses: Reimbursement of travel expenses for locations outside the contracted location, including travel to main site and other project sites.
