Data Engineer | Remote, London | Full Time | Up to £37,500 pa

Ubiquity is a UK-based Academic Publishing Services and Technology company with a global team of 30. Our innovative, remote-friendly work culture emphasises collaboration and flexibility. We're seeking a skilled and motivated Data Engineer to join our Operations team.

As a Data Engineer, you'll be responsible for building, maintaining, and running reusable metadata and file migration workflows for repositories journals, presses, and conferences moving to Ubiquity's platform. You'll create and automate ETL pipelines, develop custom content reports, and support data-driven activities across the company. This role offers the opportunity to work with a dynamic team and make a significant impact on how our data is managed and leveraged to drive decision-making.

Are you the right person for us?

  • A degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience as a Data Engineer, Data Analyst, or similar role.
  • Interest in open access, open source, and familiarity with academic publishing or a related industry is a plus.
  • Proficient in data wrangling, analytics, and visualisation.
  • Proficient in Bash/Powershell/Shell scripting, e.g. for task automation.
  • Python skills for advanced data manipulation and to support integration of data pipelines with Ubiquity's existing Python platforms and services.
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL for data extraction and compilation.
  • Strong spreadsheet skills for interrogating data and report generation.
  • Experience in extracting and translating data from/to JSON, XML, CSV.
  • Familiarity with Google BigQuery.
  • Strong understanding of ETL processes and data pipeline automation.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong cross-team collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical teams.
  • Problem-solving mindset, with a proactive approach to identifying and addressing data-related challenges.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to ensuring data accuracy and integrity.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

What will your role as a Data Engineer look like?

  • Develop and maintain workflows for migrating metadata from repository, press, and journal platforms to Ubiquity's platform, ensuring high quality and data fidelity ("no metadata left behind!").
  • Create and automate ETL pipelines to create datasets for external distribution.
  • Generate and automate content reports for internal and external stakeholders (account managers, journal editors-in-chief, press managers, repository managers, conference organisers) to provide insights into content workflow progression, usage, and progress against platform KPIs.
  • Produce metrics reports and analyse data to glean insights that support company goals and objectives, including leveraging generative AI to accelerate insight delivery.
  • Assist the technical team with data translations and integration of data pipelines.
  • Keeping up to date with best practices and emerging technologies in the industry, and applying these at Ubiquity.
