About the Role:We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated 1 to 1 Teaching Assistant to support a Year 1 child with high levels of autism who is pre-verbal and requires personal care. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a significant impact on a child's learning and development in a nurturing and inclusive school environment in Lewisham.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide tailored 1 to 1 Teaching Assistant support to the child, ensuring their individual needs are met throughout the school day.
  • Assist with communication using alternative methods such as PECS, Makaton, or other AAC tools.
  • Implement strategies to support engagement, learning, and social development in line with the child's Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP).
  • Support the child with personal care, including toileting, feeding, and hygiene, ensuring dignity and comfort at all times.
  • Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and external professionals to adapt learning activities and create a positive learning environment.
  • Encourage and promote independence while providing necessary guidance and reassurance.
  • Monitor progress, record observations, and provide feedback to staff and parents as required.
  • Maintain a safe and supportive environment, following safeguarding and school policies.

Requirements:

  • Experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), particularly those who are pre-verbal.
  • Understanding of SEN strategies and interventions, including sensory processing needs and communication aids.
  • Patience, empathy, and a proactive approach to supporting children with additional needs.
  • Ability to support with personal care in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with staff, parents, and specialists.
  • Relevant qualifications (e.g., CACHE Level 2/3, NVQ in Supporting Teaching and Learning, or equivalent) are desirable but not essential.
