Waste Manager - Building Services — Events and Conference Venue - East London - up to £50k + benefits

We’re on the hunt for a dedicated Waste Manager to oversee waste management operations within this iconic venue. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing waste reduction strategies, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and fostering a culture of sustainability within the venue and with our clients for their events.

Reporting to the Head of Cleaning and Waste Management you will become an integral part of the multi-disciplinary Building Services team who are responsible for the maintenance and operational undertaking of the venue.

Key responsibilities as the Waste Manager will include:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive waste management plans to minimize environmental impact and reduce waste generation for our own venue operations and venue partners.
  • Work alongside our official waste management supplier - Bywaters to deliver on our waste strategy and introduction of multiple new waste streams.
  • Proactively work to identify new revenue streams related to waste management, rebates, and such like, seeing them through from conception to implementation.
  • Coordinate with our official waste management supplier - Bywaters to ensure proper disposal and recycling of all waste materials and reduce contamination.
  • Conduct waste audits and analyse data to track progress towards waste reduction goals.
  • Support and train staff on proper waste sorting and disposal procedures, significantly upskilling the team.
  • Work collaboratively with our clients to create event specific waste management plans, provide show floor waste ambassadors and other relevant measures, proactively supporting them with operational efficiencies and sustainability ambitions.
  • Stay informed about relevant waste management environmental regulations, industry best practices and new innovations, proactively look to introduce these into ways of working to ensure continuous improvement of our waste management proposition.
  • Regularly communicate with stakeholders, including staff, management, and external partners, to promote and garner support for waste management efforts.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of waste management programs and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Maximise the potential ancillary revenues throughout the planning cycle, thus directly impacting the financial performance of the business. Ensure a profitable balance between event cost and event delivery through effective cost control measures and monthly forecasting, maximising revenue, whilst still delivering first class service.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and adjust plans as needed to achieve targets.
  • You may also be required to carry out ad hoc responsibilities depending on the department’s needs

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Previous experience in waste management, environmental sustainability, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of waste management principles, regulations, and best practices.
  • Knowledge and experience implementing sustainable practices in waste management.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and make data-driven decisions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage and educate diverse stakeholders.
  • Proven organisational and project management abilities, with the capability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.
  • Certification in waste management or sustainability is a plus.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities whilst maintaining longer term strategic focus.
  • Knowledge of current industry trends and best practices

Please note: this is predominantly a Monday to Friday role (40 hours/week), however occasional weekend working may be necessary at times to support higher profile events.
