Are you an experienced Health & Safety professional looking to take the next step in your career? We are seeking a dedicated Health & Safety Advisor to join our Corporate Health & Safety Team, which is part of the wider Council Health and Safety Unit (CH&SU). In this vital role, you will provide expert advice and support across the Council's departments, teams, premises, and schools, ensuring a safe working environment for all.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Health & Safety Audits:
    Conduct thorough audits of Council teams, premises, and services, including schools, ensuring that all health, safety, and welfare standards are met. Provide detailed reports and recommendations for improvements where necessary.

  • Training Delivery:
    Develop and deliver tailored health and safety training programs to various Council departments, premises managers, and schools. This will include both general safety training and specialised courses as required.

  • Health & Safety Advice:
    Act as a consultant on a wide range of health, safety, and welfare issues, providing practical advice and guidance to teams across the Council and schools. Ensure compliance with current health and safety legislation and best practices.

  • Proactive Safety Management:
    Promote a proactive approach to health and safety management within the organisation. Identify potential risks and implement measures to mitigate them, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of employees and service users.

  • Legislation Interpretation:
    Stay up to date with current and proposed health and safety legislation. Interpret and apply regulations practically to ensure that the Council remains compliant with legal obligations.

  • Support & Consultation:
    Act as a key point of contact for health and safety concerns, supporting managers and teams with expert knowledge. Provide advice on risk assessments, safety policies, and procedures to ensure they are effective and up to date.



What We Are Looking For:

  • Qualifications:
    You must hold a NEBOSH Diploma or a Degree in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent qualification). Membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) at Chartered or Graduate level is essential.

  • Experience:
    Demonstrable experience of working in a health and safety role, ideally within the public sector or local government. You should have a strong track record in conducting audits, delivering training, and providing expert safety advice.

  • Legislative Knowledge:
    A solid understanding of current and upcoming health and safety legislation and the ability to interpret and apply this to diverse situations. Experience advising on health and safety management within large organisations is beneficial.

  • Training & Auditing Skills:
    Experience in delivering health and safety training to a range of audiences and conducting comprehensive audits is essential. You will need strong communication skills and the ability to engage with individuals at all levels of the organisation.

  • Proactive & Analytical Approach:
    You must be proactive in identifying potential safety risks and providing practical, effective solutions. Strong analytical skills are required to assess safety standards and develop strategies for improvement.
